Julia is a very pleasant, accommodating, methodical and amazing tutor. She works well with my son and takes her time explaining and making sure he understands properly. She has been tutoring our son for couple of months now and I have seen good progress. Julia is detail oriented and diligent in her efforts that our son is comprehending the material, helping him build the strong writing foundation. I highly recommend Julia.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with many children who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Some were medicated, some were not. We worked on managing anger, frustration, organization and increasing focusing individually and/or in groups.
I currently work with Autistic children during a weekend social skills class. I work with verbal and non-verbal children. We work on life skills such as identifying emotions, going to a restaurant, playing on a playground, going shopping, riding public transportation etc. I use PECS with the non-verbal students.
I have been in an elementary setting as both a special education teacher (14 years) and school counselor (12 years). I have tutored in all subject areas with regular and special needs students.
I have taught science at the elementary level for many years as well as done experiments and projects.
I have taught levels k-6 Phonics through various Reading and Phonics programs such as Edmark, Cove Phonics, Target Spelling, Explode the Code- from beginning consonants and vowels to consonant and vowel digraphs.
To assist students with improving critical reading comprehension, I help them to understand and practice the various types of questions used in the SAT, insist on rigorous vocabulary practice, teach them to analyze the author's tone/attitude in the passages as well as understand the logic of the questions. I assess the student's skills with a diagnostic pre-test and assign regular homework.
To assist students with improving written expression, I work with them on improving sentences and paragraphs, identifying common sentence errors and identifying common grammar/usage errors. The students work on writing prompts that I grade using the actual rubric. I also work on pace and regularly assign homework.
I have worked with children with many special needs for years. I have worked with Learning Disabled, ADD/ADHD, Autistic, Asperger's and Spectrum and Communication Handicapped. In addition to teaching the basic content areas, I also believe it is important to work in the affective domain and social skills. I have worked on life skills with more challenged/nonverbal students.
I have run Study Skills programs for many years for grades k-6. Depending on the level, topics have included listening skills, organization, time management, test taking skills, following oral and written discussions.
I have spent many years teaching children how to construct well organized, detailed paragraphs. I teach students how to write personal narratives, "How To" paragraphs, character development, use of humor and many other skills. I use writing prompts from past ASK tests and literature.
