In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught English at the high school level (9-12) in Dade County, Florida as well as in North Jersey. For the past year and half, I have been teaching English as Second Language program to a diverse group of adult students in a classroom setting. I also teach students in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. Depending on the level and the student's goals, I teach grammar, writing and reading. My emphasis, however, is on conversational speaking, vocabulary comprehension and practical application. I'm a New Jersey state certified teacher of English levels K-12, and I have been a Certified English Teacher by the N. J. Department of Education State Board of Examiners since June 1988. I also hold a B.A. in English.
