About Melissa

Hello! My name is Melissa.

Let me start with my educational background:
I have completed my Masters in Teaching in Adolescence Education (grades 7-12) and Students with Disabilities. I am currently certified for Biology (7-12) and Students with Disabilities in the state of New York. I am pursuing a dual certification with Chemistry and am working to transfer my certifications to New Jersey as well. As an undergraduate, I studied Forensic Science and Psychology.

I am a very versatile tutor and have been tutoring for 8 years. I assign meaningful homework after each session and expect that the homework be completed for the next session. I make sure the student leaves with some kind of notes when applicable and I try to include a fun activity when possible to foster interest in the subject material. I like to know in advance what the student needs help with so that I may come fully prepared. My qualifications for the subjects I most often tutor are described at the end.

I look forward to hearing from you!

*****

Qualifications (in alphabetical order):

ACT/SAT TEST PREP: I have been tutoring test prep for 3 years, specializing in the ACT and SAT. I briefly tutored my own brother in the SAT and his overall score jumped 200 points after only 1 full-length practice SAT and two 2-hour sessions. I cannot emphasize enough that in order for results to be seen, the student MUST complete the homework I assign. Students who complete the homework see huge improvements. Others also improve, but not nearly as much as they could have if they worked on their own as well.

ALGEBRA: I am qualified to teach high school and college algebra. I've been a supplementary instructor for several college algebra courses and I have tutored algebra for a few years. I have also tutored elementary (grades k-6) math for several years and love it!

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION: I actually began my tutoring career teaching 4th and 6th grade math. I have since tutored grades k-6 in topics that range from reading analog clocks to creating scatter plots to learning how to read and understanding concepts in science. I have worked as a Mad Science Instructor for several years, which has really helped me understand how to make learning fun for young students.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: I'm also qualified to teach three extracurricular activities, which are girls lacrosse, girls volleyball, and theater. I've played lacrosse and volleyball in high school. I've acted, directed a play, directed a musical, stage managed for three performances, and cowrote a play at the college level.

PSYCHOLOGY: I've received a 5 on my AP Psychology test and I have taken many psychology courses at the college level. Psychology can be a very dense subject as there is often a lot of information to memorize and understand. I have become very good at helping students learn and study that material so that it feels less overwhelming.

PUBLIC SPEAKING: I'm qualified to tutor in public speaking. Not only have I participated in theater, but I have also given formal presentations at the college level and took a communications course.

SCIENCE: I've taken many science courses at the college level and have worked as an Anatomy Lab assistant. I have held several Leave Replacement positions at both the high school (biology, chemistry) and middle school (7th and 8th grade science) levels. I have experience tutoring Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, middle school science, and elementary school science. I have become very good at breaking down broad concepts and making them more understandable to struggling students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have tutored for ACT prep. For this test, half the battle is finishing the test during the allotted time. I find that for the English section, there are recurring grammar rules that students need to learn, and once they understand those rules, their scores tend to increase dramatically. Speed reading methods also help.

ACT Math

I have tutored for ACT prep. For this test, half the battle is finishing the test during the allotted time. There are basic equations that students need to be able to apply, and it's really important for students to learn how to make diagrams for word problems. Once some of these skills are mastered, scores tend to increase dramatically.

ACT Science

I have tutored for ACT prep. For this test, half the battle is finishing the test during the allotted time, and for the science section, students tend to have trouble interpreting the graphs and charts. I also have seen issues with quick reading comprehension for this section because a lot of the experiments that are referred to may be unfamiliar to the students. I found that once students are exposed to higher level science experiments and once students get used to interpreting diagrams, their scores increase.

Algebra 1

As part of a graduate assistantship, I have been a Supplementary Instructor for college algebra (this is the equivalent of a class-wide tutor) for 4 different college algebra classes.

Algebra 2

As part of a graduate assistantship, I have been a Supplementary Instructor for college algebra for 4 different college algebra classes. An S.I. is essentially a class-wide tutor. I also have tutored several different high school students in varying levels of algebra.

Biology

I have taken honors high school biology, college-level biology, and am currently studying to be a high school biology teacher. I have experience tutoring in biology as well.

Chemistry

In high school, I excelled in both honors and AP chemistry. I have taken Chemistry I and II as an undergraduate. Since then, I have taken upper level science courses that have reinforced what I learned in those two courses. I also have experience tutoring in chemistry.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been tutoring elementary math since 2011. I've worked with students from grade 1 through those entering the 6th grade. I have experience tutoring elementary-level reading comprehension as well. Finally, I am also an after-school elementary science instructor, and I work to make science enjoyable.

Elementary Math

I have been tutoring elementary math since 2011. I have worked with students entering 1st grade through students entering 6th grade. I do my best to make math fun by incorporating games into the lessons.

Elementary Science

I have worked for an after school science program for elementary school students. I go out of my way to make sure that science is fun for younger children because I think it is very important to instill an interest in science at a young age.

Handwriting

I know how to write in both print and cursive and am able to teach those skills to others.

For children specifically: I have worked at a daycare where handwriting was part of the curriculum, so I have experience with teaching handwriting to young students.

Lacrosse

I have played varsity lacrosse at the high school level. I played as a defensive field player and then a goalie, so I have an awareness of the different types of training necessary for both field players and goalies.

Microsoft Excel

I have taken several statistics courses in which I've used MS Excel in college. Prior, I had used it in high school for science and math courses. I have developed a skill for navigating the program and would be happy to show others how to do so because it is really a very helpful and versatile program.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have given multiple professional presentations as an undergraduate that used PowerPoint presentation. I have also used PowerPoint to explain life skills to college students. Now, I have been using it to create lessons for my future teaching. It is my absolute favorite program in Microsoft Office's entire bundle, and I have been successful in showing my peers how to use it.

Microsoft Word

I've been using MS Word since I was very young, and all the way through college. I've used it for schoolwork of varying subjects, professional documents, and even simpler documents such as party invitations. I am very good at manipulating the layout of documents, using charts, and using other helpful tools in the program - and of course, teaching others how to use them!

Organic Chemistry

I have taken organic chemistry at the undergraduate level. I have experience tutoring college-level organic chemistry and have received nothing but good reviews for my assistance with those sessions.

Prealgebra

As part of a graduate assistantship, I have been a Supplementary Instructor for 2 classes of remedial college algebra. An S.I. is the equivalent of a class-wide tutor. The beginning topics of these classes covered high school prealgebra.

Proofreading

I am an excellent writer and a very strong advocate for peer review. I am quick to find errors in writing, and I am able to explain to students why there is an error and how to fix it.

Psychology

I have received an undergraduate degree in Psychology. I have only once received a grade lower than an A in a psychology course, and that was an A- in "Adult Development".

Public Speaking

I have delivered formal presentations at the college level and participated in theater. I am an excellent resource for learning how to deliver speeches and how to make formal PowerPoint presentations and posters.

Reading

At the graduate level, I have taken several "education" courses (meaning courses that will one day earn me a teaching certification) that addressed reading in classrooms and reading techniques. Avid readers are unaware of the amount of active thinking that they exhibit while reading. Readers who struggle simply have not been taught these reading skills.

Prior to taking these classes, I have tutored two students on their reading comprehension. Now that I am aware of these skills, I believe that I would be even more qualified to help improve an individual's reading comprehension.

SAT Math

I have tutored SAT test prep and I have scored a 2050 when I took the test myself. I found that for the math section, it is a mix of understanding the problems and understanding how to navigate the questions. For example, sometimes, students waste time struggling with how to set up an equation when they can just look at the multiple choice options and piece it together. Learning the math and learning these tactics help increase students' scores significantly.

SAT Writing

I have helped tutees improve their SAT writing score through simple grammar corrections, learning how to write outlines, learning the expected format for the essay, and learning how to analyze instead of summarize. I personally received a 720 on my writing section, which I would not have been able to do without instruction from others. It is significantly easier to do well on the SAT writing section once the requirements are understood.

Study Skills

I have used different study skills throughout my entire educational career. These include different note-taking styles, flashcards, PowerPoint slides, and more. In 2014, I was a guest speaker for college students in an undergraduate class on several occasions. I presented several different topics to the students, such as time management, note taking, completing reading assignments, and study skills.

Theater

At the college level, I have directed, acted, and stage managed. I have co-written a children's play for a fundraising event and helped to organize (and acted in) three murder mystery night fundraisers. I have also performed several shows as a member of the school's improv club.

Volleyball

I played volleyball from grades 8-11. I stopped before my senior year because I had experienced a shoulder injury that made it difficult to play competitively.

I have learned the fundamentals in volleyball from several different coaches because I played in middle school, high school, and volleyball camps. I am therefore able to teach fundamentals, skills, and training techniques in several different ways.
