I have been tutoring mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics, and preparing students for the SAT and ACT for many years. I also specialize in preparing students for physics and chemistry olympiads, biology olympiad (USABO), and math competitions (especially the AMC). In addition to my many private students, I have also worked for several tutoring centers including Sylvan, Mathnasium, and Seed of Paramus. This past school year, I have also worked as a high school science teacher at Frederick Douglass Academy IV in Brooklyn, teaching living environment, ecology, and physics.
I was first introduced to teaching when, as a high school student at the Bergen County Academies, I worked at a math camp teaching non-standard problem-solving to 5th - 8th graders. Seeing the students' eyes light up with wonder upon being exposed to novel ideas and new ways of thinking or upon finally understanding difficult concepts is an experience I will not soon forget.
I am a strong believer in an individualized approach to education, and I don't adopt a one-size-fits-all strategy. I use the Socratic method to engage my students, involve them in the learning process, and allow them to discover knowledge rather than simply lecturing. I focus on concepts, reinforce them with examples, and teach my students how to think clearly and methodically, which is key to success in math and science. Over the years, I have helped many people not only to improve their grades and scores tremendously, but also to develop an interest for the subject and a desire to learn and understand it.
I welcome the challenge to turn an apathetic, disinterested student into a passionate overachiever. My most recent success story is a math student who was mistakenly placed into a geometry class without having taken algebra. She was scoring well below 50% on tests and quizzes and could not see a path to success. To make matters worse, a family emergency forced the teacher to take a leave of absence, causing even more chaos and confusion. It was very tough, but after a few months, she was not only passing her assessments, but receiving respectable grades that she never even dreamed were within reach.
My academic achievements in math and science include:
Top 10% in Chemistry I in the New Jersey Science League (NJSL)
First Place in the state in Biology II (NJSL)
Semi-finalist in the United States of America Biology Olympiad (USABO)
Qualifier for the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO)
800 on the math sections of the SAT and GRE
800 on the SAT II Biology subject test and 99th percentile on the GRE Biology subject test I have been tutoring mathematics, chemistry, biology, and physics, and preparing students for the … Read more
Michael is a great tutor. He is a Math wiz; very knowledgeable and knows the subject matter very well. He explains the subject well, making sure that I understand the problems well. He is very patient with me.
Michael exceeded our expectations. In one lesson, he helped my 15 year old daughter feel secure and confident about her upcoming Biology exam. Thank you Michael!
Michael explained my college stats class in a way that was very easy to understand, and therefore I was able to grasp on even the most difficult concepts of the class. Overall, it was a very good experience and I was able to learn a lot from it, and I Plan on using Michael for the remainder of my math courses at my college.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been preparing students for standardized tests, including the ACT, for many years and have helped my students raise their scores dramatically. In the past year, all of my students received a 35 or 36 on the ACT English exam. My method is two-fold. I teach my students the relevant concepts and material, including grammar and vocabulary. But I also give them the test-taking tools they need to maximize their scores.
I have been preparing people for standardized tests, including the ACT, for several years and have helped my students raise their scores dramatically. My last few students have all scored a 35 or 36 on the ACT math. I not only teach my students the relevant concepts and skills, such as fractions or problem solving, but also test-taking tricks that will earn them the highest possible score. I show them how to recognize various types of problems and approach and solve them with ease.
I have been preparing people for standardized tests, including the ACT, for several years and have helped my students raise their scores dramatically. I not only help reinforce the relevant concepts, such as critical reading and vocabulary, but I also teach them the test-taking tools they need to maximize their scores. I show them how to recognize certain questions that are just variations on a theme, so they will know exactly how to approach them.
I teach and reinforce the relevant skills and concepts, such as how to break down an experimental setup or how to read a graph. But I also make my students very familiar with the test format, so that they can recognize questions they have already seen in one form or another and know exactly how to approach them.
Mathematics is my greatest passion and my area of expertise. Over the years, I have helped many people improve in their classes by an entire letter grade or more. When it comes to algebra, I take great pride in being able to explain the concepts very thoroughly, deeply, and clearly. When students understand the material, it becomes less scary and they don't feel as though they are simply memorizing a series of disparate facts.
Mathematics is my greatest passion and my area of expertise. In algebra 2, I have helped many people improve in their classes by an entire letter grade or more. I explain the concepts thoroughly, deeply, and clearly. The more students understand the "why," rather than just the "how," the more eager they are to learn and the more motivated they are to succeed.
In addition to the high school and college astronomy courses that I have taken, astronomy is one of my hobbies. I have great interest in the subject, I have read a lot about it, and I have tutored several people in it. I teach my students to see the big picture, while also having an appreciation for and mastery of the details.
I majored in biology in college and took a wide range of advanced biology courses, including biochemistry. Biology is my area of expertise, my passion, and my profession. Moreover, I have been successful in helping people see the big picture as well as to understand the details, both of which are important in this subject.
Biology is my field of expertise and my major in college. I have taken many advanced biology courses in high school and college and have competed successfully in competitions. Moreover, I have experience tutoring other students in this area, helping them understand both concepts and details.
I have two current calculus students (Calculus I and Calculus III), both of whom are succeeding in their courses and have improved dramatically over the past year. The key to success in this subject is deep understanding and methodical thinking, which I help foster in all of my students. I explain the concepts clearly and teach my students the tricks of how to approach calculus problems with ease.
I have always had a passion and talent for the natural sciences. I have competed with distinction in chemistry in the New Jersey Science League, and I have been tutoring this subject with great success for many years. I explain the concepts clearly and prepare my students for any kind of problem they are likely to encounter. All of my current students are doing very well in their courses, and I am very proud of them.
I have taken differential equations as an undergraduate and received an A in the course. I also have a lot of experience tutoring this subject. The key to success in differential equations is not only being proficient in the various solution methods, but also knowing when to use which method and how to apply it. I give my students the tools they need to know how to approach and be able to tackle any problem that is likely to appear on a test.
Mathematics is my passion and one of my areas of expertise. I have competed successfully in numerous math competitions and have even helped write one. Moreover, I have worked with younger students at a math camp teaching non-standard problem solving.
Science is my passion, talent, and profession. I majored in biology in college and have always been drawn to the natural sciences. Moreover, I have competed successfully in numerous competitions and have had considerable experience working with students in this area.

I have taken many advanced math and science courses in high school and college and have competed successfully in numerous competitions. Moreover, I have plenty of experience tutoring students in math and science, as well as successfully practicing and helping others develop efficient test-taking strategies.
I took genetics courses in high school and college and have helped out some of my peers in college who were having trouble with the course. Genetics is partly mathematical, which is one of my areas of expertise, so I can explain these parts clearly as they often give trouble to students. Finally, I majored in biology in college and the overlap from the many courses I took would be helpful here as well.
Mathematics is my greatest passion and area of expertise. Geometry in particular is of great interest to me, and I have taught and tutored this subject to dozens of people, including a current student who is now doing very well in his class. I get my students excited about the subject and always seeking to dig deeper and understand better.
I am very proficient with English grammar and have tutored several students in this subject. Moreover, I have scored 800 on the SAT writing section, which includes grammar. My teaching style is to focus on understanding general rules, which are then reinforced by examples.
I am a recent college graduate (biology major) who has always had a talent for math and science. I took linear algebra in high school as part of a course called "Topics in Advanced Mathematics." Conceptually, this subject is rather simple, but students often have trouble with it because it requires that one think very clearly. This is the job of the tutor, namely to teach the student how to deconstruct the concepts and think clearly and systematically, which I can do quite well.
I have taken organic chemistry I and II as an undergraduate and have received an A in both courses. I also have a lot of experience tutoring the subject, including 2 current students, both of whom are now doing very well in their classes. I teach my students how to think clearly about the molecules and reactions, as deep understanding is especially important in organic chemistry.
Science is my area of expertise, my passion, and my field professionally. In addition to the physical science classes I have taken in college, I have tutored many students in physical science with fantastic results. I explain the concepts clearly and get my students excited about science, eager to learn more and understand deeper.
Physics has long been one of my biggest passions. I have helped many people improve in their classes by a letter grade or more. The problem many students have with physics is knowing which equation to use under which circumstances, a skill that I have helped many students perfect over the years. I explain the concepts clearly and thoroughly and get my students excited about physics and eager to learn more and understand deeper.
Mathematics is my greatest passion and my area of expertise. Over the years, I have helped many people improve in their classes by an entire letter grade or more. When it comes to precalculus, I take great pride in being able to explain the concepts very thoroughly, deeply, and clearly. When students understand the material, it becomes less scary and they don't feel as though they are simply memorizing a series of disparate facts.
Probability and combinatorics are fields of great interest for me, and I am even currently going through a book on the subject. Moreover, I have tutored dozens of people in probability and have helped my students achieve the clarity of thought necessary to be able to tackle any problem. The key is knowing which approach to use under which circumstances (as a simple example, when to use combinations vs. permutations), a skill that I have helped many people develop and perfect over the years.
I have taught and tutored math at all levels and have prepared students for standardized tests, including the SAT, for many years. I focus not only on explaining the math concepts, but also on fostering effective test-taking strategies and habits. I have received an 800 on the math section of my own SAT and have helped many of my students raise their scores by over 200 points.
I took statistics as an undergraduate and have received an A in the course. I also have plenty of experience tutoring statistics and have helped a number of people succeed in this course. I explain the concepts thoroughly and teach my students how to think clearly, so they know how to approach and are able to solve any problems that are likely to appear on a test.
Mathematics is my greatest passion and area of expertise. I also have plenty of experience teaching and tutoring trigonometry, and I have helped my students improve in their classes by a letter grade or more. I teach my students how to think clearly and methodically, and I place great emphasis on understanding, rather than on memorizing.
