I am an Electrical Engineer by education and have worked in a large corporation for 25 years. During that time I started to tutor children of all ages as well as I was an assistant college professor in the math department. I since then I got married and have two children. I continued to tutor part time. I have developed basic procedures to help children feel comfortable with math and early reading. I love to tutor preschool and young children especially so I can help develop a love of learning and the enjoyment of math. I believe everyone body can have math talent. Those that don't did not have a positive academic experience early in life. That is my goal! To give as many young children the ability to master math.
I am a "cool" and energetic woman with many years of teaching my own two children how to read before kindergarten and develop mathematical skills before kindergarten. I do not feel there is a race to have all children be readers and math wizzes before 6 years old but I do believe all children can become comfortable early on and develop skills before they enter school programs.
I also share tools with parents to reinforce our sessions. My hobbies include cooking, tennis, swimming, public relations, tutoring and gardening and traveling.
I have developed a process using basic and inexpensive tools that teaches phonics and letter recognition for young children. In addition, I share easy ideas with the parents to reinforce and expand on my tools. I try to show children that reading is a part of everything around them...like street signs and menus.
I have two children of my own that I taught how to read and understand basic math before kindergarten. I have been tutoring for over 20 years and I have been identified by my children's friends that I am the "cool mom" which shows I identify with children .
I have developed my own process for children to sound out letters but I don't ever mention the alphabet song - I feel that this song only makes children know the order and not the sounds.
I have a fun and bubbly attitude towards tutoring. I always make the child feel comfortable before we get to work. It is always in a relaxed format, but also a learning format. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
