I am a mother of two boys ages 10 and 13. I have been a teaching assistant for the last two years. Currently, I am assisting in a 3rd grade classroom, and last year I helped out in a 2nd grade classroom. I have also been a substitute teacher in every grade from kindergarten through 6th grade, including special education classes and resource rooms.
The greatest joy for me is when I get to see a student that was struggling to have an "aha" moment. I love helping children succeed. This is my passion in life. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am a certified K-6 teacher. I have been utilizing flash cards, decoding skills, and patterns when working with students on phonics. Phonics helps students read and spell. Phonics is part of an overall reading program where there is an emphasis on fluency, vocabulary and comprehension as well.
Study skills and preparation are an important part of academics. Preparing for a test can be overwhelming. Certain skills I have adapted for students are putting difficult definitions on index cards - the word on one side and definition on the other. The student can then study in a flash card format. Another study habit is preparing well in advance for a test. Studying 10-15 minutes every night prior to a test makes it less stressful and reinforces the information. Being organized with materials is another study habit that I instill in my students. Organization is a key component to study skills. I have adapted all of the above not only with my students, but with my own children and when I was a student myself. Remaining focused is essential to establishing study skills. Focusing can be difficult if the subject the student is studying is not their favorite. In order to have the students remain focused, I figure out what they like - is it a game, a video, a song - and formulate certain lessons or assignments that way so they will have fun while studying!
