Elementary Math

I have been a Math student in my high school and studied Maths, Physics, Biology and Chemistry as my core subjects. Since I was good with language and reading which are still my passion I turned towards literature and language teaching. However, my favorite topics remains Trigonometry and Algebra! I have taught students Maths for over 7 years (including children in my family till middle school). I am currently tutoring a GED student, a sixth grade student and a third grade student. I teach following the Common Core Standards as different school districts follow different textbooks. In addition, to extensive arithmetic practice, I focus on practical aspect of the topic in day to day life and encourage critical thinking in my students. One important step I have noticed is the problems student face while translating the words to a mathematical equation. The mathematical jargon is a necessity and working step by step is of essence and a necessary habit. This helps them during the PARRC, NJASK, GMT, or such other tests where 90% of the questions are word problems and about 30% of those are multi step requiring a worded explanation of the task at hand. Therefore, been able to give a logical reasoning and then be able to word it correctly briefly is equally important. In addition, I make sure that my students do not see each topic as isolated islands but as a whole connected to each other. For example, while solving a word problem about a company producing golf balls over a period of 5 years and its earnings, they will use ratios, fractions, decimals, graphs, all arithmetic as well as divisibility rules and most importantly mathematical reasoning. Moreover, using online resources, I encourage my students to practice and discover maths on their own, leading them to question their understanding and analyzing the reasoning. Working on their own they build up their confidence and enjoy maths more!

I have done extensive study and created text reading guides and taught those in classes for over 10 years. I have been able to apply those for adults as well as for children .
