About Alex

Hi, my name is Alex, and I am the science director for a large school district in New York. Previous to this position, I taught in NYC as a chemistry, physics, and AP environmental teacher. I graduated from Boston University with a BA in biology and UMass Boston with a master's in education. Although I taught science, I have been tutoring for over 15 years with tutoring companies in both Boston and New York. I have helped many students with the SAT/ACT, PSAT, ISEE, SSAT, SAT Subject tests, and Regents exams. I don't believe in one given curriculum working for every student. What I really enjoy about individual tutoring is the ability to customize a program to each student. When I first meet with a new student I will look over previous exams, quizzes, homework, and anything else that can give me an idea of where they are struggling. If I am working with a student on a standardized test, I will have them take a diagnostic exam to pinpoint any areas where they are struggling. With this method, time spent with the student will be better utilized to work on only the material the student needs help with. This ensures that we make the most of our time, and that the student benefits tremendously. Please feel free to contact me to discuss what options are available to you. I look forward to hearing from you! Hi, my name is Alex, and I am the science director for a large school district in New York. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

In the past 10 years I have taught and developed ACT prep curriculum for private companies in New York and Boston. My ACT prep curriculum was used by several private schools in Boston and I have implemented it at my own school. When working with individual students, I utilize many of the same skills used in my classroom instruction. I use diagnostic data to pinpoint areas of strength and weakness so that our sessions together are targeted to only teaching the areas of greatest need. Practice is a necessary component of any standardized test program and I encourage constant practice with actual test questions both in our sessions together and as homework.

Chemistry

In my current position, I coach and evaluate science teachers. I taught high school chemistry and AP environmental science in New York City. Additionally, I was a neuroscience major and took multiple chemistry courses.

COOP/HSPT

I am approved for the ISEE and SSAT. The COOP is a similar exam that tests the same skills and I have tutored several students for this exam.

ESL/ESOL

I currently teach a group of recent immigrants in New York focused on ESL/ESOL skills. I work on building conversation skills, we read newspaper articles together, and we practice writing often. Additionally, I took multiple courses on teaching ESL students in college and graduate school.

GRE

I have standardized test prep tutoring experience for over 15 years and experience with tutoring companies in NYC and Boston, working with individual students and small groups, and with online and in person lessons.

ISEE

I have been approved for the SSAT which is a similar exam to the ISEE. I have tutored several students for the ISEE and am familiar with the math section and its unique quantitative reasoning section.

Macintosh

I have been working on a Mac OSx platform since 2004 and have helped multiple adults get used to the differences from a Windows platform. For many, the lack of a right-click is definitely the feature that requires the most practice. When working with students, I have them try to do simple tasks without assistance first to determine where the misconceptions and errors occur before showing them step-by-step instructions.

Praxis

I am a certified teacher and have taken a Praxis exam in chemistry (173 score). I also have worked with new teachers seeking certification in other states that require the Praxis exam.

Regents

I am a certified NYS teacher with 5 years experience teaching a Regents prep course in chemistry. I have also tutored students both in school and privately for the Regents exams in living environment, physics, Integrated Algebra, ELA, and Geometry.
