About Michael

I have an MBA in Finance from The Stern School of Business at New York University, where I graduated as a Stern Scholar and a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. While attending NYU, I also served as a Teaching Assistant in the Information Technology department, where I helped other MBA students learn to use MS Office and similar tools. I earned my Bachelors degree from Hamilton College, where I majored in American History and minored in Government (Political Science). Since then, I've worked on Wall Street, in Corporate Finance, and in Marketing for some of the most prestigious companies in the world. I currently own my own consulting firm where I build models to help companies better understand their businesses.

As a father of three boys (23, 20, and 14 as of early 2016), I've had lots of experience informally tutoring many subjects as they've gone through elementary school through high school, college, and beyond. As a manager, I've guided and mentored many rising decision makers. I'm currently looking to help people, young and old, improve their understanding of subjects that I enjoy and know well, including Finance, MS Office, and American History.

I have been using PC productivity tools since before Microsoft introduced their suite of office products, and have been an advanced user of them since before Windows was available as a separate product. In business school, I served as a Teaching Assistant (TA) to help the other MBA students become proficient in these powerful tools. Currently, the MS Office suite is my mail toolbox for building client solutions in my consulting business. If you need to learn the basics, or if you desire to do something unique and complex, I can help you.

I earned my MBA in Finance with honors from NYU, perhaps the World's foremost MBA program for that concentration. I've worked as a portfolio manager on Wall Street, and in corporate finance at industrial companies (oil & gas) and at media companies (including at Dow Jones, the publisher of The Wall Street Journal). I understand finance thoroughly, and enjoy breaking the underlying concepts down to their basic elements to make them understandable and approachable.

Names. Places. Dates. Events. Sure, history is full of these things, and much more, and they can be important. However, memorizing them just isn't fun, and doesn't offer much value to the student. I don't view history that way. I see real people living interesting lives that matter, for better or worse. When we understand the individual threads of history, and how they weave together to form the symphony of our past, not only do we gain a clearer understanding of who we are and from where we came, but we learn to grow and avoid the mistakes of the past. I can't promise to give you my love of history, but I can help you to learn history more like learning the lyrics to a song and less like memorizing phone numbers.

I'm excited to work with people who are ready to learn and just need someone who understands the material and who can break it down in whatever way that makes it accessible. Everyone is different and learns in their own way - my role is to find a way that works for you and then encourage and propel you forward. Please contact me so that we can see if I can help you learn!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

Chess is one of those games that takes just minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. I do not claim mastery, but I do have a strong foundation. When I lived in Manhattan, I played chess with some success against well-ranked players.

I would not be a good tutor for advanced intermediate players, but rather for people who are hoping to learn the fundamentals of the game. I would instruct towards understanding of opening moves, mid-game development of offensive pressure and defensive positioning, and end-game closure to checkmate.

Very patient and responsive! — Michael tutored me for a graduate level Finance course. I haven't studied these types of concepts in quite some time and was worried about tackling the quantitative portion of the course. Mike was very patient and took several different approaches to ensure that I understood the material. Mike also has real world experience in the Finance sector and draws upon that in his explanations. With Mi ...
