About Lakera

After working professionally in Juvenile Justice Administration, I recognize the need to develop programs and focus on issues that cause many students to become disinterested and distracted in school and academic programs. Understanding there is a growing disconnect between school administration and students that is developing frustration and feelings of inadequacies in children and parents, I have become more diligent in building confidence through grass-root and individualized approaches.

I have always shared a passion not just learning but sharing a love for knowledge. This love spearheaded my journey for academic success throughout collegiate years obtaining a Presidential Scholarship for undergraduate studies and later a Graduate Scholarship for Masters level education. It was during these years that I began to mentor high school students in college preparation, tutoring adults for GED exams, and instructing undergraduate students in English, Philosophy, and Writing.

Later completing Law School, study skills, writing, analysis and research became second nature. Imagine, during law school, I was also a mother. Since his birth, I have instilled the same level of passion for learning, teaching him to read by the age of 3. As his current teacher, I have developed a homeschool environment that aligns with the Common Core curriculum yet allows for independent learning and "non-traditional" learning styles that furthers and strengthens his love for learning. We attempt to stay "ahead of the curve" and learn together; and I will bring this same passion to our sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

As a Student Attorney with the Howard University Criminal Justice Clinic, under the supervision of a licensed attorney, I was responsible for all litigation matters from arraignment to trial in criminal and Drug Courts. Prior to law school, I was the Chief Legal Assistant for the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Affairs and General Counsel at the N.Y.C. Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), where my responsibilities ranged from managing the agency’s civil litigation to ensuring court ordered compliance. Subsequently, I was promoted to Staff Analyst/Special Assistant to the First Deputy Commissioner, where I was directly involved in the planning and implementation of the citywide NYC Juvenile Justice 7-Day Arraignment Process and other alternative to detention programs.

Elementary (K-6th)

Currently, I am a homeschool parent of an 8 year old child, who has had and still maintains high academic achievement. I have experience developing and implementing a curriculum in compliance with Common Core. Prior to making this decision, I have not only tutored elementary students but have developed grass root non-profit programming for students ages 5-10 years old.

Public Speaking

My public experience includes court appearances, legislative lobbying, and group facilitation and training. Using these experiences coupled with best practices in public speaking, I will target areas such as audience, purpose, writing style/planning, theatrics/presentation, and confidence building. I've obtained a Bachelors in Criminal Justice, Master in Justice, Law & Society, and a Juris Doctorate.

Study Skills

After leading the Griots Brain Bowl Team to a Florida State Championship victory, I earned a Presidential Scholarship to Florida A&M University. Using flash cards, outlines, calendars, and organization, I completed my Bachelor's in 3 years and earned a Graduate Scholarship at American University. Additionally, as a law student and mother, I had to hone my study skills to academically succeed. Study skills have been imperative to my academic success and will be the foundation for my tutoring strategies.
