About James

During my undergraduate, I was pretty lucky to have several opportunities to both teach and tutor. I was a statistics and economics double major. The statistics department at my undergraduate institution allowed those who received an ‘A’ in a particular class to grade students’ homework assignments for subsequent offerings of the class. I took advantage of this by grading for three quarters (twice for basic freshman statistics, and once for a course in regression analysis). The advantage to grading homework is that the grader gets to rapidly identify the types of misconceptions students commonly have regarding the subject and to correct them with red ink, albeit not in real time.

Helping students with their math/statistics is important to me: there is a saying, "If you have learnt math, and know how to read, you can learn just about anything." The best moment for me is when something "clicks" and a student suddenly gets the material: once a student messaged saying their grade had gone from a C to a high B after a couple of tutoring sessions, and this was a very satisfying experience. I try to see exactly what a student is not understanding, and this helps to ensure the student's exact needs are being addressed.

I scored on the SAT I Math an 800 (total score 2340); SAT II Math, 800; and on the AP Calculus BC, a 5.

Feel free to contact me and we can set up when and where to meet, and what to study for!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
