About Jennifer

Education
I attended Seton Hall University beginning in 2001 and graduated with a degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences and a minor in Social Work. I later went on to attend Montclair State University's Alternate Route Program. I completed the program with a 4.0 GPA and proceeded into their dual Master's program. I am currently completing the program with a projected completion date of 2016. I will finish with a Master's of Arts in Teaching Preschool through Third and a Master's of Arts in Teaching Students with Disabilities. I have also taken the Columbia University's Teacher's College Readers Workshop program two consecutive summers in a row and this past summer I participated in their Writer's Workshop program. I am also Orton-Gillingham certificated.

Experience
I started teaching as an afternoon teacher in a private preschool in Warren. I was also a camp counselor for Camp Adventure, a science based camp and a nanny for approximately 5 years. Prior to my current position I worked at Chatham Day School, a private school in Chatham N.J. I worked there for approximately 4 years in several positions and in several different grades, between preschool and fourth. I am now in my third year in the Plainfield Public School system as a lead kindergarten teacher. I am currently a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board in Plainfield NJ, and have been for the past 5 years. I also started a non-profit called Blanket Blessings which distributes blankets to the homeless population in Plainfield and Elizabeth.

Tutoring Experience
I have tutored children of various ages for the past 7 years. As a kindergarten teacher, I love helping children learn how to read, write, and understand basic math concepts. The main goal of any tutor should be not only to advance the child academically but to make learning fun and exciting!

I am Orton-Gillingham certificated and I have been trained in Columbia University's Reader's and Writer's Workshop. I have also used the Journeys and Wonders curriculum. My mathematics curriculum experience includes Pearson Math and the MyMath system.

The OG method is defined and explained as the following: An intensive, sequential phonics-based system teaches the basics of word formation before whole meanings. The method accommodates and utilizes the three learning modalities, or pathways, through which people learn—visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Unlike some scripted and rigid reading programs, the Orton-Gillingham Approach is a system that allows for flexibility.

I also focus on helping children improve their handwriting by not only understanding the directionality of each letter and the proper way to form it, but I also use tactile methods to increase muscle memory of each letter formation. Writing skills are critical to reinforcing a balanced literacy program.

My educational philosophy is to educate the whole child by facilitating their ability to reach his/her fullest potential, in a safe and secure learning environment. All the while preparing he/she with the skills necessary for 21st century.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

As a kindergarten teacher in the public school system, in the state of New Jersey, I am required to be well versed in the Common Core standards. These standards ensure that all children, in 46 out of the 50 states, are learning the same material in each grade level. These standards also help teachers in pacing their lessons appropriately throughout the year.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified by the state of New Jersey for grades Pre-K to 3rd. However, I have worked in every grade level from Pre-K to 4th as either a teacher or a TA. I have even been an aide to a child with cerebral palsy. Furthermore, I have done tutoring for children up to the 6th grade.

Handwriting

I am a kindergarten teacher and I am also Orton-Gillingham certificated. This simply means that day in and day out I deal with helping children improve their handwriting by not only understanding the directionality of each letter and the proper way to form it, but I also use tactile methods to increase muscle memory of each letter formation.

Phonics

I am a kindergarten teacher and I am also Orton-Gillingham certificated.
