About Francis

After three decades being a successful chemical engineer at Merck Pharmaceutical Research Laboratories I took an opportunity to make a career change and became a high school chemistry teacher. My two years teaching in a NJ public high school showed me I enjoyed small one-on-one interactions much more than a large classroom setting so I've retired from teaching and become a private tutor. It is important for me to know my students and their families as individuals and become a partner in achieving their goals.

Given my background, my tutoring expertise is focused on chemistry, math courses (pre-algebra, algebra I/II, and geometry), and the math and science portions of the ACT/SAT standardized tests. Although algebra was not challenging for me personally, I realize it's difficult for many people and causes a lot of anxiety. A key to success is to really focus on MASTERING the fundamentals before tackling the more challenge problems.

Taking the ACT/SAT exams is a stressful part of the complex process of getting into college today. There is more competition than ever before and achieving your best possible score is critical. If you have already taken the exam and want to increase your score or are taking it for the first time, my supportive role is two-fold. One is to improve skills needed to solve the test problems. The other is to understand the important differences between the tests you have taken in school and these standardized national exams.

Please contact me so that we can discuss how I can help you to achieve your goals.

I have a flexible schedule and offer discounts for online tutoring and for in- person sessions that are longer than one hour.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
