About Cathy

Greetings! I love everything to do with language, and I love helping other people to learn how to better express themselves and better understand other people's communication. I have always loved teaching; I've known I wanted to be a teacher since I was seven years old, when I used to make my little brother "play" school with me.
I am very much looking forward to sharing my love of teaching with you as well!

I am a highly qualified certified teacher in New Jersey, with seven years of classroom experience. In the years I spent in the classroom, I have had experience with teaching students of all ages and ability levels, and I am comfortable with a wide range of English-related topics and skills. My areas of expertise include Research and Citation, Writing and Revising (Nonfiction, Essays, Creative Writing), Test Prep (SAT, ACT, Praxis), Literature (Reading Critically and Responding), and Public Speaking (including Theater).

My ultimate goal is to ensure that each student feels supported and that you have met your goals. To that end, I will work with you to develop an action plan and will customize my lessons to fit your needs. I am also happy to meet in person or online, or a combination of the two.

I look forward to hearing from you, and helping you to improve your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I was a high school English teacher for seven years. In that time I have taught all levels of students from special education up through AP, and I have taught at every grade level from freshman to senior.
I have read hundreds of books in my life, and I have a great deal of confidence in my ability to guide students in understanding the content of a text, as well as in my ability to help them improve their own critical reading skills for the future.

Grammar

I was a high school English teacher for seven years, and I also tutored students one-on-one during that time. I have a particularly strong grasp of correct English grammar--I also work as a freelance editor.
I have my own materials for teaching American English Grammar based on the core content standards. Additionally, I have prior knowledge of common grammar traps that students fall into and ways to help them avoid it in the future.

Literature

I have read hundreds of books in my life, and I have a great deal of confidence in my ability to guide students in understanding the content of a text, as well as in my ability to help them improve their own critical reading skills for the future.

Praxis

While working at a tutoring center, I had the opportunity to work one-one-one with a college student who was looking to improve her Praxis Writing score. I developed a six-hour Writing curriculum using Praxis preparatory books and prep materials from the Praxis website. I feel confident that I would easily be able to do the same for the Praxis Reading and Math sections as well, especially because I also have experience tutoring for the SAT and ACT.

Psychology

I was a psychology minor in college, and earned straight A's in my core classes. I was a few credits shy of earning a double major out-right and the only reason I did not graduate with a Psychology degree is because I decided to focus on my Education degree.
I have a particularly strong understanding of Educational and Adolescent Psychology, due to my background as a high school teacher.

Public Speaking

While teaching high school English, I taught several Public Speaking-oriented elective classes: Public Speaking, Discussion and Debate, and Theater I-IV. I also was the Assistant Director, and then the Director of the Spring Musical. I am familiar with a variety of techniques and "ice breaker" games that encourage students to come out of their shell and improve their public speaking presence. I also have worked with colleagues to create various rubrics and lesson progressions to help students improve their ability to craft and deliver speeches.

Reading

I have been a high school English teacher for the past seven years; additionally, I have experience with tutoring students in reading. I am familiar with a variety of techniques for helping students to develop an understanding of how to analyze a piece of writing to recognize the component parts and how and why they interact.

Writing

I am experienced in teaching all stages in the writing process from research and pre-writing through to revision. I am confident in my ability to guide students through the writing process and teach them how to improve their own writing ability.
