Oberlin College (Psychology, Art)
Syracuse University (Master's)
I'm a 2010 graduate of Syracuse University's Library and Information Science Master's program, and currently work as a freelance writer and trading card artist in addition to tutoring. I am new to Wyzant, but I have tutored a variety of subjects through Burlington County College's tutoring program, and worked with autistic children as part of Oberlin College's practicum in autism course. More recently, I have tutored local high school and college students and recent grads on a freelance basis, mostly in math and standardized test prep. I've always enjoyed and excelled in the subject, and received very high scores on the SAT and GRE math sections. In high school, I received high marks in all available honors-track math classes from algebra II through AP calculus, and I took several advanced biology and psychology classes in college that focused heavily on statistical analysis.
I'm good at explaining how math topics apply to the "real world," because I still use math to create and publish artwork. One of my strengths is showing multiple ways to solve a single problem, so I can help students make connections and understand that math is fluid, not a bunch of isolated equations. I like to make math problems fun puzzles, not frustrating busywork.
I'm also available to tutor literature and writing. I've always had a passion for reading and writing, and I know and respect many of the classics, including Shakespeare. For as long as I can remember, I've had a knack for summarizing stories in a witty way, creating parodies and relating the plots and conflicts to modern-day struggles. So I can definitely help students gain an appreciation for what they're reading. As a senior in high school, I received a 5/5 on the AP literature and composition test.
I'm a polymath, and I teach math, too! Students will be billed at half-rate if they cancel 24 hours or less before our scheduled lesson, and full rate if they cancel two hours or less before our scheduled session.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
