About Rachel

Math has always been my favorite subject. I see it as a beautiful, logical system which anyone can use to solve problems both big and small. Sometimes in a classroom setting, however, people's unique learning styles aren't taken into account and math can turn into a seemingly impossible chore. That's where my job comes in. My strength lies in breaking things into clear, easily digestible pieces. I really enjoy the collaborative process of strengthening basic principles and building together from there.

I don't believe in just memorizing formulas. Rather, I emphasize the logic behind the formula and the different situations where it applies. I believe in practice, not busy work - every exercise I assign has a specific purpose of illuminating the material from a new angle. This way, the student will gain the understanding necessary to apply the principles on his or her own. In my SAT tutoring, I also equip my students with the "tricks of the trade" for optimizing their time and efforts during testing.

Physics is another passion of mine. I have a very thorough understanding and appreciation for it, since earning undergraduate and graduate degrees in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University.

This is why becoming a math and physics tutor was a natural choice for me when I felt it was time to change careers. I have since then passed the NJ Math Praxis exam and earned an eligibility certificate to teach math in the state of New Jersey. I now have several years' experience teaching, subbing, and tutoring.

Whether you are seeking a tutor for yourself or for a loved one, I look forward to hearing from you.

My availability is weekdays, 3pm-8pm.

Thank you so much for your feedback! As we both know, your son is very intelligent to begin with, but I was really glad to see his confidence in his abilities grow over the course of our sessions.

Thank you, Gina, for your kind words. I enjoy being in the position of helping students feel more comfortable with math and science. As Jessica is both smart and attentive, it makes my job that much more enjoyable.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Hebrew

I grew up in Israel and speak fluent Hebrew. I am an avid reader - both in Hebrew and English. I had taught 4th and 5th grade Hebrew Schoolers in two different temples (River Edge and Closter) for eight years. I also tutored 12-year olds in preparation for their Bar-Mitzvah Israel trip - I taught them conversational Hebrew so that they are able to communicate during their one-month trip.

In the past year I volunteered in a Jewish Center, teaching adults Hebrew reading and Hebrew conversation on a weekly basis.

In addition, I had translated many documents from Hebrew to English - and vice versa - for different causes, among them for a NJ Jewish Day School administration.

I am patient and methodical, teaching to the student's level, whether it is Hebrew or math.

Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra is one of the main areas of math. One must master it before tackling other areas of math as well as science. As a graduate of the Columbia University Engineering School, I learned it in depth and also used it in my physics end electricity courses.

Tutoring math and physics throughout the years, I was successful at conveying the main concepts of Linear Algebra, be it linear equations, linear transformations, matrices or vectors. My visualization skills were key in the process, as I found that many students find a problem much easier to solve if it is accompanied by a picture.

I am methodical and patient, making sure a student truly understood a point before going on. At the same time, I keep in mind the end goal: for the student to internalize the ideas, one at a time and at the right order, in order to master the math tools they will need later on in high school as well as college.

Praxis

I used to work as an electrical engineer, but eventually decided to switch careers. I've always loved math, especially algebra, geometry and trigonometry. So the natural direction for me was to become a math teacher. I took and passed the NJ Math Praxis test and got an eligibility certificate to teach math in the state of New Jersey.

Since I studied and passed the Praxis math test, I believe I can be effective at preparing others for this test.
