About Joyce

Is your child struggling to complete homework on his or her own? Does your child struggle to keep up in class? I can help your child feel more confident and gain the skills he or she needs to be a successful student. Perhaps you are seeking a positive role model to get through to your child and motivate them to reach their potential.

My ability to connect with children and teens in a non-threatening, safe atmosphere built on respect and honesty has been my greatest asset as a teacher and tutor. And sometimes a little bit of extra attention and support are what your child needs to succeed.

I am a certified special education teacher with nine years of teaching experience and am highly qualified in science, math, and language arts. I currently hold an Elementary Teaching Certificate in addition to Teacher of Students with Disabilities. I graduated from Gettysburg College with a degree in biology, and have completed a master's degree in special education. I successfully teach in grades 4 through 8 as a special education teacher. My expertise is individualized instruction in Reading and Writing, including reading comprehension, fluency, decoding, and vocabulary.

As a tutor and mentor, I have worked with students ages 8-15 in a variety of subjects such as Reading, Writing, Math, and Science, as well as coaching students in time management, organizational skills, and self-esteem. A recent client wrote "My son is doing very well so far, this year, in all subjects. In particular, math. This is no doubt, due to the work you did with him."

Students are instructed and coached on an individual basis and provided with strategies that meet their needs and learning styles. I have excellent references available upon request and would be happy to provide them. Help your child get a jump start on the upcoming school year with summer enrichment tutoring. Or give your child the extra help he or she needs to achieve his or her potential.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
