It is a joy for me to work with motivated people of all ages and all walks of Life. When I see that AHA! look on a student's face, I get as much pleasure from it as the student does!
Whether I am teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to people from other countries, Spanish to English speaking students, or citizenship/naturalization preparation skills, the main goal is to help them feel the thrill of success. A large part of what I do with my students is to help them learn how to approach learning the language, and to realize that they really can do it! Once they get over the hurdle of doubt, we are on our way!
I taught Spanish 1 through senior levels at a private high school, and have had fun tutoring high school and college level Spanish. I loved Spanish in high school, spent a summer as an exchange student in El Salvador speaking Spanish constantly, and earned my BA in Spanish at Rutgers Univ. It is delightful to see my tutoring students pull up their grades and feel proud of their accomplishments.
I became certified to teach English as a Second Language (ESL), and in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and it is so much FUN! I have students from many different countries in my community college continuing education ESL classes. I get the chance to be silly and act out what I want to help my students learn, and we laugh a great deal in my classes. It is so rewarding to see my students learn enough English to get their first jobs in America! They feel very empowered!
I also help college level ESL students understand their course work in writing their term papers which I proofread for grammar and readability.
As a language and cultural consultant, and as a former corporate trainer, I find it fun and challenging to work with foreign executives at corporations to help them upgrade their English skills at work. Helping their spouses acclimate to their new surroundings and engage in their new communities is both fun and rewarding on a personal level.
It brings me great joy to work with people who want to become American citizens. It is an honor to help them with the civics questions and English language preparations for the naturalization interview and test. I admire their dedication and hard work as they approach the realization of their dream to become citizens, and it is a wonderful experience for me to help them make that dream come true! It is a joy for me to work with motivated people of all ages and all walks of Life. When I see that AHA! look on a student's face, I get as much pleasure from it as the student does!

Gail P. is a wonderful tutor. She helped my son dramatically improve his grade in High School Spanish II from a 70 in the 1st quarter to a 85 in the second quarter. My son struggled in Spanish for over two years with barely passing grades. He was completed frustrated and was at the point of giving up on the subject. In a couple of months, Gail gave my son the skills and more importantly the confidence he needed succeed in Spanish.
My daughter loves Gail. She probably doesn't need much help but gains confidence from Gail. She is the one who asks for the tutoring sessions.
Gail has been a great tutor! She returned all emails and calls promptly. Gail came to the lessons prepared and was able to teach the material in a way that my son could understand. I would highly recommend Gail
-- Brett (The one who was tutored)
I had a great experience with Gail. I only took Latin in High-school and was preparing for college where many of the students would have taken spanish despite it being spanish-101, After only nine lessons we finished an entire book, I knew hundreds words including a list of the 100 most common verbs, I could decline a verb in multiple tenses, I knew the difference between soy and estar, and was having simple conversations about family, places, and occupations. I don't think it could have gone any better. Gail was a fantastic tutor and I would recommend to everyone.
So Happy with Gail P. She is kind, understanding and LISTENS to parent and student. Makes the session fun and my son would not have passed junior year Spanish without her. Very happy and would use her again!
Gail was very up beat, warm and right on. She quickly picked up where my son was having trouble. I'm sure with some guide-lines from his school Spanish teacher she will help him make some important progress!
I hired Gail to help my 71 year old mom with her US Citizenship test preparation. Thanks to Gail's patience, humor, encouragement, great listening skills and detailed feedback on areas to put more effort in (at times critical but necessary), my mom is a US citizen today. Thanks so much Gail!!!
I hired Gail for my mother, who is 64 years old. We took 20 lessons over the summer (as a jump start) and then in 2 months an additional 8 lessons right before the exam. That was enough for my mom, who had a almost no”speaking” English, to be able to communicate with the Immigration officer and here we go – she is a U.S. Citizen now!!!
Many thanks to Gail!
Our son hated Spanish and did very poorly last school year. We hired Gail to help him out over the summer, and she exceeded our expectations. Not only was she knowledgeable about Spanish, but she was also able to help our son gain new confidence and believe in his ability to learn the subject.
It's still early in the new school year, but our son's Spanish teacher said she's impressed with his improved proficiency and attitude. Thanks, Gail!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My main focus in teaching English is to help non-native speakers improve their skills. We work on vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, aural and oral skills. I work with executives and their family members to help them adjust to American life. I also help those who speak no English acquire the language skills to secure employment. While I have had great success with people of many world languages, I am particularly well-suited to helping Spanish-speaking individuals, as I am bi-lingual in Spanish and English.
For the past fifteen years I have been teaching ESL as a contractor through local English and Cross Cultural companies. I have had numerous students, from many different countries and received excellent reviews from all of them. Through these companies I have assisted executives in improving their English, and I have helped spouses learn English and become acclimated to life in the US.
I am also certified in TEFL/TESOL and teach ESL through a county non-profit adult education organization. Under a government grant program for nearly seven years, I have taught beginner and intermediate students from a variety of countries to communicate in English, thus helping them to find employment, and to function better in the US.
I enjoy coaching students in the naturalization process. I help them improve their English skills and we study the civics questions in preparation for the oral citizenship test. We work on understanding all the information on the N-400 application so they can answer the questions they will be asked about it. It is very gratifying to see them achieve their dreams of becoming US citizens!
Won't it feel wonderful to get your GED? I would be delighted to help you reach your goal! The hardest part is making the decision to start, and you did that already. Now we can dig in and get those courses completed. Let's work together, and make it happen!
I earned my BA from Douglass College of Rutgers University. I have many years of experience as a substitute teacher, and English was one of the subjects I taught. I believe that earning my BA degree in Spanish helped me to better understand the grammar of my own language. I currently teach English grammar to foreign students as part of my ESL teaching.
My writing skills are excellent and I publish a newsletter almost weekly through my own business.
Proper grammar and English language usage have always been important values in my family of origin, and in my own home as I raised my children. I will be very happy to work with others to help them improve their grammar and word usage.
Spanish became my favorite subject in high school, but only after an initial struggle! For my first two years, it was really tough. Then, in my third year, it all made sense, and there was no stopping me! I majored in Spanish in college, and enjoy using my skills to this day. SO! I understand how it feels to struggle with learning the language, and can empathize with the student who is having a hard time. It is enormously gratifying to see my students overcome difficulties in learning Spanish, and enjoy success.
When a student is having trouble with a subject, or perhaps several, it can lead to feelings of overwhelm and low self-esteem. Then a downward spiral can begin, and the student loses hope. Many times it is a matter of improving the student's approach of HOW to study the subject, how to budget time, and very importantly beginning to BELIEVE that it is possible to learn the subject.
I use my coaching skills to help the student regain a sense of personal power and personal responsibility toward the school work. Bit by bit, we build on small successes, and when the student sees that is IS possible to make a positive change in the outcome, we are on our way!
Each student is different, and I work with each one to find the best methods for study and subject mastery. There is nothing better than to see the smile on the face of a student who previously was looking sad or angry about school. Yes, it is possible!
