About Lauren

I am certified to teach both English and English as a Second Language. I have experience teaching vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, business English and other skills to beginner through advanced level ESL/ESOL learners. Currently, I teach adult ESL classes, and I love seeing the progress my students make. As a tutor, I will work with you step by step so that you gain confidence using English and make progress towards your goals.

I also have a background in teaching and tutoring writing, reading comprehension, organizational skills, and preparation for the Writing and Critical Reading sections of the SAT. I worked for several years as a high school English teacher. As a tutor, I have worked with students to improve their fundamental writing and reading comprehension skills, as well as planning and revising school reports, research papers and college entrance essays. I can provide homework and study skills support for upper elementary through high school students (not including high school level math or sciences).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

As a high school English teacher, I developed a unit on college entrance essay writing. I have also tutored students individually to develop, revise and edit college essays.

Vocabulary

From teacher English as a second language, to preparing students for the SAT, vocabulary is important. I give students many opportunities to practice with new vocabulary words in different contexts. I help students gain skills, such as using context clues and knowledge of word parts, to figure out new words on their own.

Writing

I have taught and tutored students in all types of writing including college entrance essays, research papers and creative writing. I enjoy helping students master the elements of strong writing.
