My desire to teach biology and chemistry at the college level originated during my undergraduate education at Camden county college. Though I have always had a deep-seated interest and appreciation for science, interactions with my knowledgeable, enthusiastic undergraduate biology professors are what motivated me to pursue teaching. As a graduate student at the Thomas Jefferson University, I have taken great strides toward becoming an effective and proficient teacher, primarily by serving as a teaching assistant for introductory biotech courses. I also served as a mentor for high school students from Lincoln and Roxborough high schools exposing them to Biotechnology at a very early age. These experiences have been critical in enabling me to develop goals for student learning, to explore various teaching methods, and to examine means for evaluating student learning.
I believe that learning is an active process. My role as teacher is to be a guide to this process, not merely by supplying essential information, but by providing the means to acquire knowledge independently and to utilize learned ideas in new situations. I strive to stimulate students’ critical thinking skills and intellectual growth in order to set the stage for lifelong learning opportunities. While success in achieving this goal may depend on each individual student, properly motivated students do enjoy the learning process as they take an active role in it. I find that the best motivator for students is their own curiosity.
Math is a subject that I enjoy learning as well as teaching. My experiences with students have also puzzled me as to why most of them do not like Math. As a math tutor I want to change this perspective of students. As a Biology and Chemistry teacher I can say that without it is impossible to study at science subjects without the understanding of Math.
My core knowledge and experiences are in Biology and Chemistry.
I know that I am a good tutor/teacher from the fact that many students unknown to me often find my information from friends and email me in advance that they would like to register for my class. These kind of gestures give me an immense sense of satisfaction.
I seek to build a good rapport with the students, taking time to get to know each student. I can best assist them if I know their goals, values, issues, and a little about their lives. I am more like a friend to my students and I believe creating this bond is very important for students to lose their fear and ask questions without hesitation. Moreover, I believe that students are more highly motivated when they sense that their tutors cares about them. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
