About Linda

Although I am not a certified teacher, I love to learn and want to help others to learn as well. I understand how stressful school can be, especially when students feel as though they can't keep up or can't understand the material. Through personal experience with my own children I've become sensitive to each student's individual needs. I strive to instill the confidence needed for successful long-term academic achievement, while placing a focus on integrating required curricula with individual student interests. I want students to learn with the joy of a five-year-old, and to understand how what they are learning relates to their interests!

My academic background is in Environmental Science and Geography but I've always loved reading and writing. I've worked for the Department of Environmental Protection, overseeing the cleanup of hazardous waste sites. My favorite parts of my job have always involved communicating complex ideas, finding the exact right words to assure an accurate understanding.

I served for 12 years on my local Board of Education (3 as Board President), so I have experience with curriculum development, assessments, and Department of Education requirements. More importantly, I have an understanding of the challenges teachers face, and a respect for their impassioned drive to meet the need of all their students. I hope to be able to supplement their efforts through tutoring.

In my professional career I've come to understand the critical importance of communication. Whether written or oral, being able to express information and ideas is a key success factor. Even outside of academic or work environments, being able to read with understanding and write with clarity are critical to successful personal relationships as well as being an active community participant. I think back fondly (weird as it may seem) to diagraming sentences and identifying parts of speech, the fundamentals of understanding language and the building blocks of creating it. Recently I've created a blog as a creative outlet for my own personal writing. Some may think it odd, but I'm enjoying the process of writing this summary!

Sometimes the focus of traditional school and teaching misses the mark. Students are expected to embrace material which they see as irrelevant to their lives; individuals' performance is judged against a common benchmark, taking the joy out of learning and shaking students' confidence in their knowledge. I seek to supplement my students' education so they can become confident learners.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
