About Lawrence

ARTIST

I have been an artist all my life. I attended charcoal drawing classes in elementary school and continued my art studies through middle and high school. Voted class artist my senior year. Attended duCret art school. I accept freelance work and continue to self-educate myself. In 2011 I returned to Brookdale college to achieve my AFA degree in the visual arts. I have been a counselor and mentor as well as a private tutor for many years. My work is diverse, and I can handle most mediums with ease. I enjoy sharing what I know and helping others discover their own creative potential.

PHOTOGRAPHER

I have been published in several books, and I cover live events in NJ/NY and PA including the past years in NYC with the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. Other work includes product photography and private client parties, fund raising and concerts.

ASTRONOMER

Sine childhood I have looked to the stars. I currently own several telescopes and with them I provide educational outreach at Star Parties across NJ and volunteer my services as a merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts. In 2010 I became Senior Qualified Observer at AAI Sperry Observatory which allows access to 2 of the largest telescopes on the East coast.

APPLE MACINTOSH

I have been using Apple products since 1979. I have worked for Apple and have been formally trained by them. I own four Mac's, iPAD, iPHONE, iPOD and NANO. All my astronomy, art and photography interests are accompanied by my MAC. I can help you understand general use, software, switching over from PC, setting up WIFI, printers, scanners, transferring photos, editing movies, making DVD's, etc.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

I use Illustrator professionally for private clients to design logos and adjust artwork when needed. I have taken two typography college level classes using Illustrator for all my assignments.

Adobe Photoshop

I currently use Adobe Photoshop CS6 for digital photo manipulation and correction. I also create special effects and custom digital art for fun and for my private clients. Everything I do is on a Macintosh but I am very familiar with the software on PC platform as well. We cover basic tools and how they work, then we move into what you are looking to do with the software. I look forward to working with you.

Astronomy

Since 1977 I have studied Astronomy. I currently own 4 telescopes ( each one different types for various uses ) I assist teaching astronomy to local elementary schools at Star Parties and since 2000 I have been a Qualified Observer at my local Astronomy club, AAI William Sperry Observatory in Cranford, NJ. Carl Sagan's Cosmos TV series and Jack Horkheimer's STARGAZER programs have kept me informed of the universe for decades. I use STARRY NIGHT software to track planets and deep sky objects. I have photographed Comets, Eclipses, Nebulae and the Moon many times using my MEADE LX50 8" SCT. Currently I use my ORION 12" Dobsonian Truss along with my Celestron 80MM Refractor for Star Parties. I have access to the 24' SCT Reflector at AAI Sperry for personal use. I am also a merit badge counselor in Astronomy for the Boy Scouts.

Drawing

I have been drawing for over 35 years - mostly self-taught along with various art classes and open studio lessons. I have always loved the visual arts. Drawing was an extension of animation which I continue to practice on a daily basis. I am well versed in many mediums such as; Pencil, Ink, Pastel, Color Pencil, Charcoal, Sanguine, Vine Charcoal, Marker - all are drawing media I am experienced in.

General Computer

I've been using Lightroom since version 1 and currently run version 5.

I own 5 Macs and have been qualified by Apple during my employment with them.

Macintosh

I have been using APPLE products since 1981 and currently I own 4 computers, plus an iPhone, iPad and iPod. All my creative work is done on a Macintosh along with a scanner and drawing tablet. For a time I was employed by Apple, and I have been trained in their product line. in addition I have helped many of friends switch over to Apple products and tutor them in MAC OSX software.

I use iLIFE, iWork, Apature, iDVD, Garageband, Facetime, Messenger, ITunes, Safari and many other Mac based software applications.

Photography

My current photo kit includes the PENTAX K10D with accessories. I have been shooting for over 12 years now professionally for my own work and for clients. My professional work includes product photos for pharma companies and live event coverage.

Patient and thorough — Lawrence is extremely patient and helpful. He doesn't mind repeating the same topics over and over until I completely understand what it is i am trying to learn. I need things repeated to me over and over until it finally clicks and he is great with that. Definitely recommend him. I have learned all the basics of Photoshop with Lawrence in 2 hours! But I will keep going back to him until I become ...
