About Ariela

The reason I decided to become a tutor is because I love to see students with a passion for learning as strong as my own. It makes me excited and happy to share my love of Latin and English with young people, especially when they find themselves struggling with these subjects. My academic career has imbued in me a great understanding of both Latin and English, each language informing the other. I am a Classics major and Literatures in English minor, and to top it off I have an honors thesis in Classics. I have been employed as a tutor both privately and by my school's Academic Resource Center.

I have experience tutoring in both English and Latin, among some miscellaneous other subjects. I have the most experience tutoring Latin (grammar, vocabulary, syntax, translation, etc.), English reading and comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and critical writing skills. While I have a high standard and am a stickler for proper grammar, I always take the time to ask the student what is working for them and what is not. I will always ask what learning method works best for each student: Do you work best with flashcards? Or mock quizzes? Would you rather the lesson be more musical? Or do you just need the concepts to be laid out for you in detail? I am flexible; the goal is to help my students flourish!

As for scheduling meetings, my time is very flexible. I have a 3-hour cancellation notice policy, and will work to make myself available at convenient times. Traveling is a challenge for me at the moment, as I do not have my own transportation. Fortunately, I live on campus at Connecticut College, whose library has just been remodeled with plenty of lovely study spaces and conference rooms that are a dream come true for any student. If coming to campus is not agreeable to you, I'm sure we could work out an arrangement where everyone is happy and not inconvenienced.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you with your studies!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I have had four years of college and three years in high school on Classics. This includes history, literature, language, culture, and art. My major is in Classics, and I once wrote an Introduction to Latin course which included several lessons on Classics.
