I am college student at PCCC studying Education. When I transfer, I want to double major in Secondary Education and Spanish. I also earn my certification in ESL as well. I am bilingual, (I am half Puerto Rican) and I learned Spanish through friends and family as well as academically. In my Spanish classes, I always took a level ahead of my grade because my teachers saw that I thrived and preferred a challenging course load. During my freshmen and sophomore years, I volunteered to privately tutor some of Spanish-speaking students from my high school's ESL class after school a few days a week. My senior year, I opted out of AP Spanish and instead decided to do an independent study in an ESL class.
For the independent study, I worked with several students from very diverse backgrounds including the Republic of Georgia, Syria, El Salvador, Colombia, South Vietnam and Thailand. The main focus of my study was to see the various levels of student language acquisition and how their native language related to English. I also determined the method of language retention and the rate of retention in the individual student based on their personal learning style(s) (i.e., auditory, kinetic, visual, etc.).

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was one of the most highly regarded students in my class for ability to not only retain the information but being able to challenge and give a new perspective to various subjects, such as suffrage, the Civil War and even current day history that we as Americans are making by the minute. When I learn and teach history to my peers or students, I make the emphasis on the content and the present day relation of a subject in time rather than dates. While dates are important in history such as December 7th, 1941, I would much rather focus on the what-ifs and whys, in order to allow the student to feel what it was like to be in that situation in time.
I have been the volunteer mentor, SLT (Servant Leader in Training) under Streamside Camp and Conference Center which is a non-denominational Christian camp for three years. I was a camper and earned up to the 2nd to last bible rank within the camp.
