About Shane

"The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are, first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense."
Thomas A. Edison

The above captures all that I believe is necessary to succeed - in academics, athletics, or life in general. I have found Edison's words to be true in my own experience, and I believe anyone, student or otherwise, can reach his/her goals by working hard, being relentless, but keeping a good head on his/her shoulders all the while.

Soon after arriving at Boston College, I stumbled onto the men's rowing team, starting out near the bottom of the freshman/novice team. A couple of years of persistence and many blisters and callouses later, with 2 marathons under my belt, I made my way into the bow of the Varsity 8+, the program's top boat, mainly because I never stopped pushing myself. Rowing did not come naturally, but simply because I chose to improve year to year, I kept progressing; I still look for ways I can improve as a teacher, athlete, son, brother, etc. This lesson of perseverance, in all endeavors, is one I look to instill in my students.

I have taught in classroom settings, in the preferred setting of 1-on-1 interaction, and the ages of the students with whom I work is quite varied (from 9 years old to 21+ years old). Most of my work, though, is with high school students, and with a younger brother now in his sophomore year at Georgetown University, I am very much in tune with the demands on students' time.

I have experience tutoring a wide range of subjects! My main tutoring strengths are centered around test prep for the ASVAB, PSAT, SAT, ACT and LSAT, but other intellectual interests of mine include logic and philosophy as a general discipline. I also view the use of proper grammar, proofreading ability, and vocabulary development as crucial factors of student improvement in writing.

CANCELLATION POLICY (effective as of 09/10/2017):

There are two (2) actions that qualify as student cancellations. They are outlined below - along with their respective consequences:

Action 1 | A student (or other individual representing the student's interest) cancels a scheduled lesson in-between 24 and 2 hours before that scheduled lesson's start time. The consequence is a cancellation fee of $30.

Action 2 | A student (or other individual representing the student's interest) cancels a lesson either between 2 and 0 hours before the scheduled lesson start time or after the scheduled lesson start time. The consequence is the scheduled lesson being billed in full. For example, if a lesson were scheduled to last from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and then a student texted me to cancel anytime after 5:00 pm that same evening, then I would submit the lesson - listing 7:00 pm as the start time and 8:30 pm as the finish time.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Econometrics

I am qualified in econometrics - generally - given my bachelor's degree in economics completed at Boston College in May 2015. I am qualified - specifically - given my course grade "A-" in the course "Econometric Methods", which I completed during my second year of study at BC.

Logic

I am qualified in logic - generally - given my minor in philosophy completed at Boston College in May 2015. I am qualified - specifically - given my course grade "A" in the course "Logic", which I completed during my third year of study. In addition to this introductory course, I earned an "A-" in the course "Charles S. Pierce", which (as the name suggests) was dedicated to the study of American logician Charles S. Pierce. I have since continued to study logic, largely in preparation for the October 2015 LSAT, on which I scored in the 90th percentile.

LSAT

I scored in the 90th percentile and truly believe that the LSAT is a test on which any test-taker can improve, sometimes drastically. My score was actually toward the low end of where I had been practicing, since after 15 timed prep-tests (actual previously administered LSAT's), my 'high-water mark' was 173.

I've tested, reviewed, and occasionally re-tested on hundreds upon hundreds of practice questions... since practice does not make perfect; PERFECT practice makes perfect.

SAT Math

I scored a 760 on the math portion of the SAT back in high school and, in addition to having a thorough understanding of the test's demands, I enjoy helping relay concepts necessary to success and test strategies to my students.

SAT Reading

I enjoy helping my students master the different question types that appear on the Reading Test of the SAT. By anticipating the various change-ups that can get thrown their way, my students benefit in becoming more critical thinkers, and they become versatile test-takers as a result.

SAT Writing

I scored a 780 on the Writing Test of the SAT back in high school, when the test was out of 2400, and I currently enjoy helping students work through the new SAT's grammatical questions and more challenging logical organization and transition questions.
