About Shane

“The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are, first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense.”
Thomas A. Edison

Thomas Edison is credited with several quotations, many of which I appreciate, but the above captures all that I believe is necessary to succeed - in academics, athletics, or life in general. I have found his words to be true in my own experience, and I believe anyone, student or otherwise, can reach his/her goals by working hard, being relentless, but keeping a good head on his/her shoulders all the while.

Soon after arriving at Boston College, I stumbled onto the men's rowing team, starting out near the bottom of the freshman/novice team. A couple of years of persistence and many blisters and callouses later, with 2 marathons under my belt, I made my way into the bow of the Varsity 8+ (the program's top boat), mainly because I never stopped pushing myself. Rowing did not come naturally, but simply because I chose to improve year to year, I kept progressing; I still look for ways I can improve as a teacher, athlete, son, brother, etc. This lesson of perseverance, in all endeavors, is one I look to instill in my students.

I have taught in classroom settings, in the preferred setting of 1-on-1 interaction, and the ages of the students with whom I work is quite varied (from 9 years old to 21+ years old). Most of my work, though, is with high school students, and with a younger brother in only his freshman year at Georgetown University, I am very much in tune with the demands on students' time.

I have had experience tutoring a wide range of subjects since my junior year in high school. My main tutoring strengths are centered around test prep for the ASVAB, PSAT, ACT, SAT, and LSAT, but other intellectual interests of mine include logic, philosophy as a general discipline, along with grammar, proofreading and vocabulary as crucial factors of student improvement in writing structure and technique.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Econometrics

I am qualified in econometrics - generally - given my bachelor's degree in economics completed at Boston College in May 2015. I am qualified - specifically - given my course grade "A-" in the course "Econometric Methods", which I completed during my second year of study at BC.

Logic

I am qualified in logic - generally - given my minor in philosophy completed at Boston College in May 2015. I am qualified - specifically - given my course grade "A" in the course "Logic", which I completed during my third year of study. In addition to this introductory course, I earned an "A-" in the course "Charles S. Pierce", which (as the name suggests) was dedicated to the study of American logician Charles S. Pierce. I have since continued to study logic, largely in preparation for the October 2015 LSAT, on which I scored in the 90th percentile.

LSAT

I scored a 164 on the LSAT - 90th percentile - and truly believe that this is a test on which almost any test-taker can improve... sometimes drastically. My score was actually toward the low end of where I had been practicing, since after 15 timed prep-tests (actual previously administered LSAT's), my 'high-water mark' was 173.

I've tested, reviewed, and occasionally re-tested on hundreds upon hundreds of practice questions... since practice does not make perfect; PERFECT practice makes perfect.

SAT Math

I scored a 760 on the math portion of the SAT back in high school and have a solid understanding of the demands of the test - in terms of both format and content.

SAT Reading

I scored a 640 on the reading portion of the SAT back in high school, which was a bit disappointing for me given my other section scores, but what I enjoy most about my job now is tutoring the strategies and techniques crucial to improvements on the section... strategies and techniques I wish I knew better back when I was testing myself!!

SAT Writing

I scored a 780 on the writing portion of the SAT back in high school and really enjoy helping students improve at both the multiple choice and essay parts of the section.
