About Andrea

Dear families,

I am excited that you have found my page, and that I have the opportunity to tell you more about my tutoring services. I am currently applying to schools in order to obtain a Phd in Education and Curriculum development. My extensive experience with children of all ages has helped me to realize that there is much work to be done regarding serving the emotional needs of students in our education system. My long term goals include eventually becoming a college professor and founding a small private school that also addresses emotional and behavioral needs in addition to educational needs.

I hold a master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from New York University. This degree allowed me to study child and human development from the inside out, and eventually to become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in the state of New Jersey. I am currently engaging in private practice and working in a variety of settings including the children's system of care, public schools, outpatient and intensive outpatient treatment, and others. One of my areas of focus is school and career related counseling.

I completed a bachelor's degree from The University of Hawaii with majors in Youth Theater and History. As you may imagine, I have a unique way of communicating with my students fostered by my background in the creative arts. In my free time, I enjoy writing, singing, reading, yoga, cooking, and spending time with my pets.

With regard to my practical tutoring experience, I was employed by one of the top two test prep companies in the nation, I have almost ten years and over 500 students worth of tutoring and teaching experience in all subjects of the SAT, ACT, PSAT, SSAT, and GRE. I use my various experiences to both mentor and teach the students that I tutor so that they are willing to put in the effort towards learning. I can also help with the college application process in general, the financial aid process, resume, and/or college essay. I can also help elementary, middle school, and high school in general and/or specific academic subjects including algebra, geometry, reading, study skills, and more.

When students put in the effort, they can usually count on at least two hundred points over-all improvement on the SAT, two cumulative points on the ACT, and twenty points on the PSAT. Some of them have even achieved over five hundred points improvement (combined sections) on the SAT or six points (overall) on the ACT! I do work with the same guarantee that my old tutoring company does, which is 200 overall points on the SAT, and two points overall on the ACT. BUT, I do it at HALF the cost, and in HALF the time. In fact, I guarantee it. Students that work with me for sixteen hours or more will get 200 points overall improvement on the SAT and/or 2 average points overall improvement on the ACT, or I will complete a free two hour session to find out what went wrong.

I am available to tutor students most weekday afternoons, evenings or weekends. I will travel to your home or your student may come to The Toms River Library. Sessions for students online are also available via Google Hangouts. Sessions cancelled less than 24hrs in advance will incur the full lesson fee.

I have a wide variety of experience with students of all ages and learning abilities. I know I can build your child's confidence whether he or she is gifted or learning disabled. Keep in mind that I am trained specifically in test preparation. There are many great Math and English teachers out there, but I am an expert on the exams themselves. They are primarily about strategy.

I do request that my students have specific materials for SAT and/or ACT preparation. The majority of my students start out in the 400's or 500's for the SAT, but I have helped many of my students reach the highly sought after 750 plus range. Many of my ACT students start out in the low to mid 20's, but I have helped my students obtain 33's and above.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have tutored many students in ACT English with great success. There are two portions of the exam which include English related concepts. These are "English" and "Reading." The English section of the exam involves understanding several basic grammar rules and applying them in different ways. The second part of the English exam involves stylistic questions which involves understanding sequencing and purpose in writing. The Reading section involves careful reading and comprehension of sometimes complex ideas and vocabulary. I help my students go through each concept in a step by step manner so that they may learn the differences between question types and how to best answer each one.

ACT Math

I have tutored ACT Math for over five years for several international tutoring companies as well as independent of any company. I have extensive experience in all subject matter covered on the exam, which includes Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. I am always interested to show my students shortcuts that may be available to them, as well as how to break down concepts in a step-by-step manner. Sometimes understanding the language presented on the ACT is essential to realizing which particular math concept is covered, and I help my students excel at that as well. Most of my students are able to improve two average points or more on the exam, and some are able to improve much more!

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra I and II for over ten years. I can help students prepare for exams as well as complete coursework. I have many shortcuts to assist my students with various Algebra topics as well as the ability to help students understand math vocabulary so that difficult wording is never a problem with questions. I can tutor Algebra I, Algebra II, and Algebra as part of the SAT, SAT II Subject Test, and GRE for high school as well as college students.

Anthropology

I have tutored the GRE for the past five years both independently and with an International Test Preparation Company. I adjust my lessons for adult learners so that we are working more collaboratively, rather than with me acting as the teacher, and you as the student. I tutor all three sections of the exam, which are Math, Verbal, and Writing. I can help whether you are taking the paper or computer version of the test.

Hard Of Hearing

I spent four years studying American Sign Language. I have a medium level of proficiency in ASL, as well as a high level of proficiency in etiquette related to teaching hard of hearing or deaf students that may rely on devices to assist in hearing and/or lip reading.

PSAT

I have tutored the PSAT for over five years and my students have had great success, which has included improvement of over 20 points per section in many cases. I tutor all three sections of the exam which include Math, Reading, and Writing. All of my students are taught strategies to beat the exam, as most of them have a clear understanding of the subject matter on the exam. The test is worded in a difficult way, which is where most of the students have trouble. I am a great motivator, and I work hard at building the confidence of all of my students.

Public Speaking

I taught in front of classrooms full of high school students for three years. I also regularly give presentations on various topics related to social work, education, and college entrance exam preparation. I help my students build their confidence and become organized in order to give an interesting and effective presentation.

Most of my students start out in the 400's or 500's, but I have also helped students reach the 750+ range. Most of my students can expect at least 200 points over all improvement. Some of my students have even improved 200 points per section!

SAT Reading

Some of my students have even improved 200 points per section! I work diligently to help students understand the confusing passages, difficult wording of the questions, and how to short cut the vocabulary section.

SAT Writing

I have over five years of experience tutoring all three subjects of the SAT both independently and for an international tutoring company. I work diligently to help my students understand the most commonly tested grammar rules on the test, and to use process of elimination to find the correct answer. Most of my students start out in the 400's or 500's, but I have also helped students reach the 750+ range. Most of my students can expect at least 200 points over all improvement. Some of my students have even improved 200 points per section!
