About Kelly

When it comes to math, I'm not just a teacher that relays the information and forces memorization. My classroom, or tutoring environment, is a place where I engage students and encourage them to find the same passion that I feel for the subject matter. When the collaboration of hard work pays off, the smiling is contagious. Who doesn't like to be good at something - especially something that proved difficult initially?

As a teacher at an inner city high school, and a former tutor in both rural and suburban areas, I have experience in teaching students from a multitude of backgrounds, and am skilled at differentiating instruction to suit my students' needs. I specialize in Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus, as well as preparation for tests such as the SAT, ACT, HSPA, PARCC, GRE and Praxis. I work hard to keep my students motivated, and assign homework as necessary to prevent them from regressing.

I hold my students to the same standards that I set for myself, and appreciate all feedback and referrals! Time is important to all of us, so I try to be flexible with my schedule, as well as the locations in which we work. I ask that cancellations be made 6 hours ahead of time, and offer makeup classes.

If you have any questions that haven't been answered above, please feel free to ask me! I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

As a high school math teacher, part of my job is to ensure that my students are prepared to take the tests necessary to continue their education. I have years of experience tutoring students for the ACT as well as being a chief examiner when our school administers the exam. My degree in mathematics provided me with the content knowledge necessary to ensure that all areas of math covered on the exam are a part of my skill set.

Algebra 1

Most secondary level math subjects rely on skills learned in algebra I. As a geometry teacher, I am constantly reinforcing these skills in order to move forward and prepare my students for algebra II. Over the summer, I teach algebra I for credit recovery in my district's summer school program. Due to the shorter time period, I have created my lessons in a way that ensures the content is covered without sacrificing the time necessary to allow for comprehension.

Algebra 2

The skill set learned in Algebra II contains pieces (like factoring polynomials) that will later be used in Precalculus and Calculus. Teaching these without a brief review of Algebra II at the beginning of the semester can be detrimental once I reach those topics that rely on Algebra II skills. Instead, I review them at the beginning of the semester, ensure my students remember them, and then use these skills as a segue into the more complex computations that they will be using them for.

Anatomy

As a former nursing student, I have knowledge in both anatomy and physiology. I also have several years of experience working in the nursing field, most specially in a hospital setting.

Calculus

Calculus is one of those courses that can be difficult to teach (or tutor) as the time you have spent out of the classroom elongates. Fortunately, I have taught Calculus for over five consecutive years now, and have tutored in the subject for seven. The constant exposure to the content material allows for fast recollection on my behalf and for fresh ideas of how to explain it when other means do not work.

Geometry

Geometry was always my favorite math topic! It is very misunderstood, as most students don't realize how often they will use these tools. I have been teaching Geometry for over five years now, and have been tutoring in the subject for nearly ten. I am full of fresh ideas, and hands on activities to help students comprehend the subject!

Physiology

Despite my career change, I continue to study anatomy on the side, and keep myself medically educated. I feel confident that I can assist others with this topic.

She will give your kid confidence

Kelly is an awesome tutor and amazing person. My daughter is an excellent student and a high achiever. She wanted to work with Kelly to review information our school system hasn't reviewed. My daughter is sure that her goals will be met since she has met Kelly.
