About Alicia

I am a classically-trained singer with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance (summa cum laude) from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from The New England Conservatory of Music. I am also a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, a movement modality that is a helpful adjunct to singing.

With over 15 years of teaching experience, I am very comfortable teaching various age groups and musical genres and have had great success teaching young singers between the ages of 11 to 18 and adults of all ages. I customize each lesson to the particular needs of the student, ensuring that optimum learning can take place. My lessons focus on the positive, what the student is doing well, and gradually building new skills from there. I offer positive encouragement for risks taken and goals achieved, because singers need to feel confident and calm to perform their best. And, of course, I try to make each lesson fun!

In my lessons, I teach a healthy, classical vocal technique that is applicable to every genre and style. This technique gives my students a strong base from which their voices can develop as they mature. Students are encouraged to bring in pieces that they love to work on and I recommend other songs that fit their voices and will help them progress technically. During lessons, I also teach musicianship, including reading music (if required), ear training, style, enunciation, good use of the body, breathing and performance techniques.

I am an active performer and have several concerts scheduled this fall. In this way, I can be a role model for my students.

I would be happy to speak with you about your particular needs and how I can help!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
