About Nate

Look no further if you are searching for a passionate, energetic, and versatile teacher. With 10 years experience in teaching music, I have tutored beginners and advanced students in subjects spanning the musical realm. I have taught drums and voice privately since 2006, and the last two years, I have taught music theory, ear training, and music history at Blair Academy, in addition to running the choruses and the orchestra.

Music is my passion, and I get a thrill from helping students unlock their own passion and understanding of it. No student is too inexperienced; no musical field is too obscure! I push my students and do not give up until our objective is achieved. Sometimes, this is hard, but it is ultimately worth it in the end. I believe every student must become rock-solid in the fundamentals, then build on them step-by-step. This ensures that each step of the way makes sense and allows the student to retain everything that has come before.

I earned my BM in Voice from USC and my MM in Choral Conducting from Yale, both of which involved extensive training in music theory, ear training, sight-singing, vocal pedagogy, music history, several languages, and other fields. I specialize in tonal music theory, especially prep for the AP Music Theory exam, and voice lessons. I also speak French, German, and Bulgarian, having lived and traveled around Europe using these languages to communicate. I am available to tutor beginning students in these languages.

I am available to travel or to set up online sessions, and my time constraints are generally flexible. I look forward to getting you started on your road to musical and linguistic mastery!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bulgarian

I lived in Bulgaria for a year, conducting research on the Shopski music. To prepare, I had to become proficient in the language. Half of my research was conducted in the language, and I lived among the society for a year, communicating primarily in Bulgarian.

Ear Training

I earned my BM and MM in music performance, and both degrees involved extensive ear training. I also teach the subject in my current job teaching AP Theory at my school. I emphasize intervallic and scale degree recognition in my teaching.

General Music

I earned my BM in Vocal Arts and MM in Choral Conducting. Because of the nature of these degrees, I am proficient in a wide range of subjects. I have professional experience as a singer, composer, and conductor, as well as a teacher.

Music History

I earned my BM and MM in music performance, and both degrees involved extensive education in music history. I also teach the subject in my current job at my school. I like to emphasize broad cultural trends in teaching history, particularly how societies have vacillated between preferring order and balance (as evidenced by Renaissance and Classical music) and asymmetric wildness (as evidenced by the Baroque and Romantic eras).

Sight Singing

I earned my BM and MM in music performance, and both degrees involved extensive sight-singing. I also teach the subject in my current job teaching AP Theory at my school. I emphasize harmonic recognition in my teaching of the subject.

Voice (Music)

I earned my BM in Vocal Performance from USC summa cum laude. I have maintained my singing career to this day, performing on a regular basis. At my school, I have 3 voice students currently.
