I am a teacher of biology, currently holding a CEAS in biological sciences. I graduated cum laude with a BS in biology and a BS in secondary education. My experience with teaching includes several practicums working with middle and high school students, and a semester long student teaching experience at the high school level. I also private tutor and work with area schools to provide supplemental tutoring in reading, writing, and math.
I also have an AAS in Animal Science Technology, and I worked in a garden center as the tropical plant specialist for 13 years.
I am the person everyone comes to when they have a question about anything related to science, not just biology! It is my philosophy that everyone can "do" science! It is my goal to open up the world of biology to all students through hands on learning experiences, observations of the world around them, and applications of those experiences to their own lives. I want my students to see the big picture, and to take notice of the patterns that exist in nature.
My students will not only be taught the essentials, but they will be introduced to a way of thinking about biology that will enhance their critical thinking skills and ability to analyze and solve problems. These are skills that are becoming more and more necessary in these trying times. Once students are able to see for themselves how everything in the entire world interconnects with everything else, biology and all other sciences will begin to make sense without the need for strict memorization of facts! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have had extensive hands on experience (13 years) working with live plants in a garden center. I am an expert gardener and propagate my own houseplants. I have a thorough knowledge of the life cycle of plants and cultural needs including knowledge of soil requirements, diseases and pests affecting them, and the role of water in photosynthesis.
During my student teaching experience, I developed and taught a unit about the human body, which included nutrition. I know how to read and analyze food labels, calculate calories based on the information provided on a food label. I can accurately categorize all food sources into one of the nutrient classes: carbohydrate, fat, or protein. I can explain the difference between minerals and vitamins. I have a working knowledge of which foods the human body needs and in what proportions for adequate nutrition.
