About Anna

“Instruction does much," wrote Goethe, in one of his letters, "but encouragement everything." As an individual dedicated to teaching and mentorship, I have taken these words to heart, and I strive to teach my students through example and encouragement as much as through instruction. I believe that learn can, and should be, an enjoyable experience, and I endeavor to make it such.

I graduated magna cum laude from a difficult liberal arts school located in lower Manhattan. In addition to serving in a nominated "scholar" position (in which it was my job to tutor struggling students in my academic house), I was employed as a school tutor and teaching assistant for Economics and Philosophy courses over the course of my 3.5 years at school. My experience as a teacher and tutor in a variety of math, science, and humanities courses gives me a strong foundation to work with students from elementary to high school.

My strengths lie in English and the humanities; I am an excellent editor, and I use my editing to teach through example and exercise. The same can be said for other subjects like philosophy, history, and civics. My teaching style is largely Socratic in nature: I believe that students learn best when they are forced to defend their own ideas and pushed out of their comfort zones, no matter how young they are. Busy work is not something I am keen on assigning, though I do acknowledge that there are instances when extra practice is merited.

I will also note that I was a full-time, homeschooled student from K-12 grade. I know the homeschool system and I work well with those sort of students. I am willing to be a regular humanities tutor for students who are homeschooled.

As an honors liberal arts student, I have a solid and expansive foundation in a variety of different written disciplines, from speech to research essays to creative writing. Grammar is a particular strength of mine, as is vocabulary skill and style. I believe that much English skills are best learned through trial and error and, quite simply, practice. I'm not looking to drill students with sentence diagrams; I'm looking to teach them how to find and correct errors instinctively.

As an aspiring graduate student in history, I can confidently say that this is one of my strongest subjects. History is one of the few academic subjects that is never static: every moment, new history is being created, and I believe that it is just as important to be knowledgeable of current events as it is to be of past. I strive to make history real and present to my students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

First and foremost, I am a Christian, and I've been reading the Bible since the day I learned to read. But more importantly, I have taken multiple classes in Biblical literature and Biblical interpretation, and I currently teach a weekly class on Biblical interpretation. I have written numerous papers on various Biblical subjects.

Homeschool

I was a 12-year homeschooled student, and I regularly tutored and taught my peers during that time. I have organized and run classes of my own for small groups of students, and I have been actively involved in a variety of homeschool groups for several years.

Public Speaking

I have been participating in public speaking competitions since I was eight years old. I have competed twice on the national level for public speaking, and have placed in the ton ten in the nation. I was also an active member of my college debate team. Outside of education, I participated, and won, a variety of communication contests, and acted as a representative for multiple organizations, which required me to speak on a variety of issues, often at length and without preparation.

Religion

I am a religious person and I have studied multiple religious systems over the last several years. As a Christian, I have a solid understanding of Biblical knowledge and general Church history. Many of my Bible classes were taught by a practicing Jew, and I have taken special-interest classes in Jewish religious studies. I also spent a semester focusing on the history of Islam and Islamic theology, and I have read the Koran and the Hadith in detail.
