About Frank

Hi, I have two degrees, one in English and one in Communications, from Rutgers New Brunswick where I was employed as a tutor for 7 semesters. While studying at Rutgers I tutored basic composition, expository writing, ESL writing (advanced and basic), research writing, and technical writing. My SAT scores was a combined 1830 with a 630 for critical writing, a 540 for math, and a 660 for my writing sample.

Now that the technical matters are taken care of, I will tell you a bit about myself. I love educating students and encourage my students to exhibit a multidisciplinary perspective because I believe that it helps their critical thinking faculties and also helps them to place topics of their own interest within their answers to an assignment.

I believe that it is crucial for students to enjoy what they learn and practice this belief by being polite, well spoken, and as helpful as I can be while I come to understand the student's learning preferences and deficiencies and how they contribute to their individual assignment task.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have been diagnosed myself since I entered college and, as someone who suffers from a chronic pain disability, I have found it difficult to maintain focus oftentimes as well. During my time tutoring in college one of my students was diagnosed with ADHD and I managed to help him get through his course without the help of medication. Furthermore, as an ADHD sufferer myself I have found that some medications can help. That being said, medication should be carefully controlled, and sometimes minimal. The biggest change has to come from within the student themselves; I know. Textbook outline format teaching, when coupled with a strict study regimen of review material and testing, can help students a lot. ADHD students who have more extreme difficulty maintaining focus on a single subject can shift from one study topic to another with smaller tests and outlines instead. I am sensitive to the emotional needs of people and children and do not take anyone's kids lightly. I am serious but pleasant and can keep a student on focus without stressing them out.

English

I am a double graduate of Rutgers with BAs in Communications and English Literature, both of which require intensive reading abilities and I am also an avid reader myself so my literacy skills are well developed. As a current substitute teacher and MAT (Masters in Teaching) student I understand the issues that children in a K-12 setting can have with literacy as well as various methods we can use to address them. I hope this has been descriptive enough to ensure you as to my talents and abilities as an educator.

Reading

I am an avid reader who enjoys reading both fiction and non-fiction literature. As a double major of Communications and English Lit. in Undergrad I can say that I am extremely capable in close-reading, reading comprehension, and comparative reading skills. My current studies at Monmouth University in their MAT program have bolstered my abilities to understand reading as a discipline and I have taken many courses on the subject of teaching reading since my induction in the MAT program.
