Graduating top of the class from the very best engineering university (ranked #1 in the world ahead of MIT, 2015 US News), I have studied quantum mechanics, computer science and statistics in greater depth, which enable me to appreciate the simplicity and intertwining of science from various angle.
I teach by asking questions to provoke active thinking instead of giving out answers. We together are engaged in very productive thought process. After initial session, strength/weakness will be identified and goal would be set. In the past three years, I have been successful in providing private and group lessons to over 300 students, from neighboring schools such as Ridge High, Mendham, Pingry, Newark Academy, Delbarton, Millburn, Far Hill Day School, Kent Place, Oratory Prep, UCMagnet, SCVTS, , Watchung Regional, Raritan High, New Providence, as far as Bergen Academies, The Lawrenceville School, Phillips Exeter Academy. Many students went on to score 5 on AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Chem, AP Statistics and 800 on SAT math, chemistry and physics. Some of them earned prestigious scholarships such as Stamps Scholar. I also tutored dozens of college and graduate students from Princeton, UPenn, Cornell, Emory, CMU, UMichigan, Johns Hopkins, SUNY, Drew, Rutgers, Montclair on subjects such as Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equation, Gaming Theory, Statistics, Algorithm, College Physics and Physical Chemistry etc.

I am flexible, open to daytime or evening session. Group rate is available too. You have option for multiple subjects within same session. I always listen to your feedback carefully. I am confident that we will see improved grade and higher interest in short time. Science can be very rewarding and there is a better way to learn. Let's work together and NOW!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 deals with basic mathematical operations, factorization, solving linear equation and graphing simple functions, which lays foundation to algebra 2 and precalculus. Struggling students usually lack the essential skills and proper technique to solve problems with speed and accuracy. Drawing from many years' experience, my teaching will concentrate in working on exercises together, clear the confusion, establish solid rules to iron out mistakes and instill confidence in accuracy then speed.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra deals with factorization, solving polynomial equation and graphing functions, which lays foundation to precalculus and physics. Struggling students usually lack the essential skills and proper technique to solve problems with speed and accuracy. Drawing from many years' experience, my teaching will concentrate in working on exercises together, clear the confusion, establish solid rules to iron out mistake and instill confidence in accuracy then speed.
Calculus,

Calculus

Building upon algebra, geometry, and calculus is the gateway to higher math and college physics. Struggling students usually fall into two categories: 1) weak foundation of algebra/geometry 2) simply overwhelmed by more complicated functions, new concepts in series/limits or the sheer number of differential and integral identities (all taught in a very fast pace). My method: 1) Provide review of precalculus constantly. 2) Teach through visual methods, emphasizing construction and interpretation of graphs, so that students will have clear understanding of abstract concepts. 3)Together practice key differential/integral identities to improve speed and accuracy.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry requires different skill set. It's common that kids used to be good at algebra suddenly have difficulty here. Geometry demands spatial recognition and applying established rules (postulate/theorem) in deductive reasoning PLUS writing down your proof in clear logic order. I first make sure students have a clear grasp on all the facts/rules established, then guide them to organize/write down thought process in a logical way. Finally I will teach them how to pick up the hidden clue that stronger players usually spot out intuitively. In geometry, the right intuition is the key.
Physics,

Physics

Physics is one of the tougher science subjects, building upon solid math and word problem solving skill. Struggling students usually fall into two categories: 1) weak foundation of algebra/geometry/pre-calculus; 2) simply overwhelmed by new physical concepts and sheer scope of new materials covered in such a fast pace! My method is to teach by asking right questions to provoke students thinking about physics concepts instead of giving out answers. 1) Provide intensive review of relevant math skills constantly. 2)Teach through visual methods, emphasizing the clear understanding of new concepts in physical process and a disciplined approach to construct free-body diagram, so that students will spot where the key concept lies and how to set up the right equations accordingly. In physics, conceptual understanding is the King!
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalc connects algebra and geometry to higher math (calculus). Struggling students usually fall into two categories: 1) weak foundation of algebra/geometry 2) simply overwhelmed by complicated functions or the sheer number of trigonometry identities (all taught in a very fast pace). My method: 1) Provide intensive review of relevant subject constantly. 2) Teach through visual methods emphasizing the construct/interpretation of function graphs , so that students always have clear picture where the key concept lies.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

SAT/ACT math is difficult because of the of topics that it covers, not the depth. Mistakes often happen when students are not sure about the content of that particular question. It’s wrong to treat SAT as a trick test and try to game it by spending time to learn empty “technique” commonly found on SAT-prep books. Instead, my tutoring is focused on the content. Solidify your knowledge base first! Drawing from years of experience, I know exactly which topics are likely problematic and where the points are deducted. I provide review and exercises to strengthen students in those areas. As a result, my students will go into the test with full confidence. Only by this way of preparation, they will remain calm throughout and won’t panic even after encountering 1 or 2 tough questions (that is when one starts to fall into trap and make careless mistakes). Prepare the right way. Stay calm and carry on.

Linear Algebra

My graduate degree at University of Notre Dame was on Quantum Mechanics, which requires solving differential equations routinely. In computer language, all differential equations are solved in matrix form, which is the subject of linear algebra. Very Knowledgeable

Hong had a great understanding of AP Physics. He helped my daughter in reviewing for a test and answered all her questions.

Steven, 1 lesson with Hong

Wonderful tutor & person

Mr. Hong is a great tutor technically, but he also has a wonderful demeanor that makes the student feel at ease working with him, maximizing the benefits.

Raouf, 1 lesson with Hong
Tutor responded:

Thank you very much. I learned a lot just by walking into your house. A great pleasure and one of the reason I love tutoring.

Very patient, responded to our email/phone call quite timely

This is the second time we have requested Mr. Hong H. to tutor my son. We asked him back because we were very pleased with him. Not only does he have the requisite expertise in his subject area, he is also a kind and patient teacher. He understands his student's needs and devises an appropriate lesson plan. My son is very comfortable with him. Most of all, we are impressed by his passion for what he does. He not only teaches the basic material, but also provides excellent examples which extend and further clarify the material. He proudly told us he is a full time tutor. In today's world, not many people can do that. We are happy to give him five stars!

David, 2 lessons with Hong
Tutor responded:

Thank you very much. Although I tutor college graduate level math, It's still very rare to see a high school junior taking advanced math class such as Ordinary Differential Equation. Very impressive kid. Pleasure is mine!

Good tutor

Hong helped me with improving my understanding of physics and get back on solid ground. He explained the concepts well and helped me improve my approach to solving problems in this class.

Matt, 1 lesson with Hong
Tutor responded:

Thank you. In physics, clear understanding of concepts and visualization of physics process is the most important part. Pay attention to disciplined approach in construction of free-body diagram so that one can set up the right equations naturally.

Fantastic and impressive physics tutor

Extremely satisfied with the physics tutoring. Hong's teaching focuses on understanding fundamental theories, problem solving, building confidence and achieving results.

Liwen, 1 lesson with Hong
Tutor responded:

Thank you. Not surprised to hear that your daughter starting to tutor her classmates on physics. Proud of her.

Great tutor!

Best math tutor we ever found! Hong is sharp and spotted the problem right away. He relates extremely well to the kid and has magic to teach stuff in a fun way (They chatted about “beautiful” math history). Within 3 days (long sessions), my kid’s CTY Honor Algebra 2 score shot up from 60% in a sample test to PERFECT 100% in an actual test! Weeks later he passed the school district placement test with flying colors (score 98/100) and got accepted into an advanced math class. Can’t say enough about him.

Xuan, 203 lessons with Hong
Tutor responded:

Glad to hear the good news. Happy to be able to help kid achieve his goal. Math can be fun and there IS a better way to learn.

Great tutor

Hong provided a great lesson. He is very patient and knowledgeable. He was able to quickly assess my son's current level and move forward from there. We look forward to seeing him again.

Terri, 1 lesson with Hong

Great tutor and easy to work with!

Hong did a very nice job working with our beginning geometry student. Hong is making exercises for them to do together as well as taking information from is currently being studied in class. Thanks Hong!
