Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor in Elementary because I am state (NJ) certified to teach ESL to grades K-12 and have a K-12 substitute certification. In my years teaching basic skills with the Essex Country Educational Services, I taught children the basic skills of math and different subject areas that helped them improve in their writing skills and understanding of the subject matter. When I worked in the New Brunswick school system, even though I was considered an ESL teacher, many times I would educate non-ESL students in different subject areas to improve their confidence and academic work.
Phonics,

Phonics

I feel I am qualified to teach phonics because I already do this with tutoring and my substitute teaching job for K-8. When teaching phonics you need to break down the sound, pronunciation what is needed to learn. Being an ESL teacher, phonics and ESL go hand in hand. It does not matter the age because phonics is needed to learn a language and realization of what phonic rules should be followed. For example, ed endings have 3 phonic endings of t, d, and ed. It depends on the letter before the -ed what the ending sound is like opened has a d sound because open ends with -n. I have a BA degree in sociology and a MA degree in ESL plus NJ state certified in ESL. I also obtained substitute teaching certificate in Morris County NJ.

Study Skills

I feel I am qualified to teach study skills because I already do this with tutoring and my substitute teaching job for K-8. When teaching study skills you need to break down what is needed to learn and how each student can learn with their learning style. For example, I have a student who if you explain what to do he stares at you with a blank face but if you give him a visual, drawing or writing on the white board or props like on-line pictures or videos it helps the student learn and take him/her to the next step. I have also taught basic skills which you do focus on improving in study skills. I have a BA degree in sociology and a MA degree in ESL plus NJ state certified in ESL. I also obtained substitute teaching certificate in Morris County NJ.
