About Joyce

Client Testimonial: "My daughter has been working with Joyce for a little over 6 months now. Joyce is one of the most patient and gifted teachers I know. She has the keen ability to determine what a student’s strengths and weaknesses are and then focuses in on those specific areas. She has an in depth understanding of what is involved when teaching children with special needs. She connected well with my 13 year old daughter right off the bat and made my daughter feel very comfortable. When my daughter began working with Joyce her grades were less than desirable. We are talking mostly Cs and Ds. But for the 3rd marking period grades improved drastically. Mostly Bs with a couple of As and only 2 Cs. I was beyond ecstatic. Even her teachers comment how her class participation has increased and she is always prepared for class. She is not shy or embarrassed about asking questions when she is unsure. It has given her the solid foundation she was lacking and with that she has gained confidence in herself. She is like a totally different child and it is because of the time Joyce has spent with her." - Lisa Bennet

My expertise is individualized instruction in Reading and language arts, including reading comprehension, fluency, decoding, and vocabulary. I have extensive training and experience using Lindamood-Bell learning processes. This is a specialized program geared towards students of all ages through adults, focusing on all subject areas. Reading is the basis of all learning, and this will teach your child how to use sensory processes to build symbol imagery, concept imagery, and phoneme awareness. A weakness in any one of these areas may lead to learning difficulties. I am trained in Seeing Stars, a reading fluency and spelling program, and Visualizing and Verbalizing, a program for cognitive development, comprehension, and thinking. These two programs put together have resulted in remarkable growth in students and adults with weaknesses in reading, comprehension, and retention of information.

With ten years of elementary and middle school teaching experience, I am a certified special education teacher and am highly qualified in science, math, and language arts. I currently hold an Elementary Teaching Certificate in addition to Teacher of Students with Disabilities. I graduated from Gettysburg College with a degree in biology, and have completed a Master's degree in special education. I have successfully taught in grades 1 through 8 as a special education teacher.

As a tutor and mentor, I have worked with students ages 6-14 in a variety of subjects such as Reading, Writing, Math, and Science, as well as coaching students in time management, organizational skills, study skills and self-esteem.

Students are instructed on an individual basis and provided with strategies that meet their needs and learning styles. Help your child get a jump start on the upcoming school year with summer enrichment tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am an experienced special education teacher who has worked with students with ADD/ADHD and have been successful in helping them to achieve their goals. I use specific strategies geared towards individual students and their needs in order to help them learn.

Dyslexia

I am a special education teacher who has worked with students with dyslexia for over ten years. I have been successful in teaching students how to read using the Wilson Reading Program, which is based on Orton Gillingham, Project Read, and Lindamood Bell. All three of these programs have specific strategies that when put together produce the most significant gains in reading than just one program on it's own.

Study Skills

I am an experienced tutor and have helped students to use strategies that will help them learn concepts that are difficult for them. Strategies are individualized according to the student's learning style and tailored to meet the needs of each student. Study skills are essential to the academic success of every student, and knowing how to study and retain information is imperative to a student's success in college. I can help your child learn how to study and remember important information, concepts, and skills that he/she will use for a lifetime.

Skills include organization, time management, color coding material, etc. Students will learn what their learning style is through diagnostic testing. This helps students determine the best way to study.

Writing

Trained and experienced teacher of 6 plus 1 writing and balanced literacy. Expertise involves teaching writing of basic components such as sentences, paragraphs, and essays. Skilled at producing results from reluctant writers in various genres.
