I have been a Special Education Teacher for seven years working in the public schools of New Jersey. I also am a football and basketball coach. I pride myself in dealing effectively with students who have difficulty learning or who don't like to learn. I am a friendly guy who enjoys getting along with my students. Learning requires a good relationship between student and teacher. I will hold my students accountable for learning and we will get along and have fun too.
I have taught all subjects at the elementary level, but my favorite subject to teach is middle school math. I deeply believe it is some of the most practical learning a child will ever do besides learning to read and it is fun for me. My aim is to transfer that fun to the students I tutor. Teaching in the public schools, I am very familiar with the math curriculum in K-8. I have worked in self-contained classrooms and inclusion classrooms. This experience will help me bring the students I tutor to the level of their peers in the mainstream. For example, I like to follow the strategy of "I do, We do, They do" to build the independent skills they need in the mainstream. If my students pay attention to my modelling and examples, and try to apply themselves, growth in independence should take place.
Students with special needs have the same goals and desires as other students, but it's much harder for these students to satisfy those goals and desires. Special Educators try to ease the process of learning so they do feel the sense of accomplishment, growth and self-esteem. To do this I always try to find the learning zone of each student I teach. That is, work that's not to hard, but not to easy either. This challenges students and produces change and growth. My training as a Special ed teacher allows me to build these effective lessons for the students I tutor. In addition, I am knowledgeable of Individual Education Plans (IEP) and have the ability to modify lessons and apply any and all the strategies they call for. Finally, my training and experience will allow me to analyze and see where mistakes are being made and why. This is done through task analysis and error analysis. I am a very positive person as it relates to children with special needs. I believe in them. I respect their potential. I am a patient person who looks to build on my students' small successes. My goal is to always try to motivate my students to improve and better themselves.
My rate for tutoring $60/hr. I look forward to meeting you. I look forward to working with you. I look forward to seeing the growth and accomplishments of every student I tutor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
