As a reading specialist, and a special educator, I strive to learn what every student needs, and how to meet the needs of each of my students. I begin with gaining the trust with each student I work with, and we journey together to gain the essential skills needed to be successful in today's society. I am a dynamic, creative, resourceful reading specialist with over a decade of classroom experience who is well accomplished with the best practices of balanced literacy which encompasses formative and sumative assessments., differentiated student instruction, which is multi-sensory, sequential, systematic and has proven success with readers. I have assisted many students to become more confident in reading, writing and spelling. I consider it to be a wonderful gift, to teach a child, not just to learn to read, but to want to, and ultimately, love to read.
I have extension training in Orton Gillingham, the most research based methodology for teaching dyslexic students. I am certified as a Elementary Specialist of Phonics First. I am well versed with the Common Core Standards, PARCC, and the Reading and Writing Workshop. I have attended workshop at Columbia University, and received my Master of Arts, in Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University with a certification as a reading specialist as well as a supervisor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified as a special education teacher and have worked extensively with students who have ADD/ADHD. I also have attended workshops to stay up on current practices to work successfully with these students. I received my masters degree at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), which is only one of a handful of universities that is recognized by the International Dyslexia Association as a educational institution which has the same standards and philosophy at FDU in regard to professionals teaching children with dyslexia.
