About Kimmi

Hello everyone! My name is Kimmi. For the past 8 years, I've tutored in American Sign Language. I am attending college now to obtain my degree in ASL to English Interpreting/Sign Language Interpreting Education. I have a very good knowledge of both English and ASL linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics) and have studied grammar in both languages extensively. I have tutored all age ranges (infant/pre-k - elementary - middle school - high school - college - adult) and have worked in a Deaf/Hard of Hearing self contained classroom. I work well with both children and adults. I spend a lot of my time within the Deaf community and go to many Deaf events in the area.

As I mentioned before, I do attend college for a degree related to ASL, but I'm also a CODA (Child Of a Deaf Adult). I grew up with one foot in the Deaf world so not only can I help you with your language skills, but I can also teach you about the culture, self expression, and the Deaf community as well. I hope to sign with you soon and give you more insight into this beautiful language!

I am a CODA, I have worked in the school system with both Deaf and hearing children, I tutor students within my own college from time to time, I have tutored not only conversational ASL but also ASL and Music (how to gloss music from English into Sign Language), I have been tutoring for the past 8 years, and I can work with any age group. This is my passion.

I am always ready to welcome new students no matter their age or skill level. I make sure my classes are fun and that you have all of the information you need to excel in this language! Please feel free to send me a message and set up a lesson!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sign Language

I am qualified to tutor in American Sign Language, first and foremost, because I am a CODA. This means that I am a Child Of a Deaf Adult. Although I am a hearing person myself, ASL was my first language. I know how to correctly execute the five parameters of a sign [hand shape, location, palm orientation, movement, and non-manual signal]. I have studied linguistics which includes the phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics of not only English but ASL. I attend college for ASL Interpreting and I have been a tutor for ASL for the last 8 years.
