I am a NJ certified teacher for preschool to third grade, a substitute at Long Branch public schools and private music teacher with six years of experience in teaching violin and tutoring French and English grammar and writing.
Tutoring is not only an opportunity to overcome academic problems, but to encourage a child's intellectual and personal growth. Besides helping a student succeed in a subject, I want him or her to move on in academics with the tools to be a focused, engaged and responsible student for his/her future in school, college and beyond. With patience and determination, tutoring can give students positive reinforcement on their intellectual abilities and desire to learn. I am a strong believer in Howard Gardner's research on the "Multiple Intelligences," and I have seen great results by focusing on a child's learning preferences whether they be linguistic, logic-mathematical, musical, spatial, bodily kinesthetic, naturalist, interpersonal or intrapersonal.
My first priority is to be caring and considerate of my student's needs both academically and emotionally. Although I studied difficult coursework under tutors and music teachers from all over the world, as a child I spent hours everyday after school at education centers like the Huntington Learning Center, so I relate to the difficulty a child may face in learning experiences. I have also taken educational courses, child psychology courses, and have experience working with children from ages 4-18 in subjects such as general music, general education, instrumental music lessons and other subjects. I am also able for tutoring in French for students in elementary and middle school levels, and am familiar with a wide variety of teaching techniques in foreign languages. I am available for tutoring at the student's home and/or public locations such as libraries and schools and at my current residence in Red Bank. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Although I have studied violin for 10 years, I have studied and played the cello for many years as well. Having taken lessons specifically for teaching string instruments at Mason Gross School of the Arts and the Monmouth Conservatory of music, I am well trained in teaching cello for beginner to intermediate students. I also teach many other string instruments as well, including viola and viola da gamba (a predecessor of the cello).
At the Mason Gross School of the Arts, I took many courses in ear training and understand this subject very well. Sometimes, the discernment of basic chords, seventh chords, or even more simpler things like rhythms and intervals can be challenging for students in high school, college, or music students who are willing to sharpen their skills. As a violinist with relative pitch, I can teach students how to discern intervals and rhythms mentally with many of the skills I learned from my teachers, tutors and course work. Also, I like to think that I can even make ear training a fun experience as well.
At the Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences I was fortunate to take education courses in preparation for becoming a music teacher. I have taken several educational and academic courses in the areas of English, Music, Math, Physics, Writing, Literature and History and have 60 hours experience student teaching in East Brunswick Public Schools. I have been helping students with these areas on a one on one basis and I want to help any student reach his/her goals in academics.
Besides playing and performing on violin, the flute is an instrument very close to my heart. I studied flute for 4 years before playing violin while in middle school and then took specific courses for woodwind instruction in college. I played flute and piccolo in Marching Band while attending public school and also have taken private lessons in flute from many teachers in NJ. I understand how to help students with proper ombrasure, breathing, posture and general instrumental playing. I can also provide students with sheet music to play any pieces or style of music they like best. I believe music should be something to enjoy no matter what the instrument may be.
Music education is a wonderful way to enhance students' global outlook, world history, reading and math skills and much more. Having graduated from Mason Gross School of the Arts, I am very skilled at music theory, music history, ear training, piano and other overall areas taught in music appreciation courses.
When many people ask me why I love music history so much, I can't help but compare it to Indiana Jones. Music History can be an exciting field because there's still so much about early composers that is unknown to us. Since I have performed on Baroque violin and Viola da Gamba with the New York Continuo Collective and many other groups, music history is my specialty. At Rutgers, I also studied Music History with musicologist Doug Johnson and Rufus Hallmark. I can help make music history exciting, interesting, and refreshing for students who would like tutoring in this subject.
Sight singing is one of the most crucial abilities a musician or student can have. Not only does it represent the mental coordination and understanding of pitch and rhythm, but doing so sends a message to other musicians that we can proudly and properly communicate musical ideas with our own voice (which sometimes does a better job at communicating than our own instrument can!). Having taken voice lessons and received numerous courses in sight singing and ear training, I can help students achieve proper placement of notes and rhythms in basic speech level singing or in a fuller chest voice. Through this ability, students can become better musicians and more understanding of concepts in music theory.
