About Andrew

Hello there!

I have New Jersey teacher certification in K-6 Elementary Education, Students with Disabilities, and English as a Second Language. I hold my B.A. in Philosophy and M.A. in Comparative History from Rutgers University, and recently completed my Ed.M. at the Teachers College of Columbia University.

Simply put, I differentiate my instruction to effectively teach all kinds of learners, from auditory to visual to analytic. I have over five years of teaching experience working with students from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural groups, including students with various learning impediments.

I am patient and understanding, but I also maintain high expectations for all of my students. I align my lessons to the Common Core State Standards to ensure rigorous tutoring sessions. I engage my students by using many hands-on activities, and even integrate iPad and SMART Technologies into my lessons to promote twenty-first century skills.

Please contact me to inquire how I may be of assistance to your child!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Teaching students with ADD/ADHD requires engaging, yet rigorous lessons. As a NJ certified teacher in Students with Disabilities, I have successfully taught students with ADD/ADHD for over 5 years.

I engage my students by using many hands-on activities, and even integrate SMART Technologies into my lessons by using a touch-screen laptop. My tutoring sessions are highly interactive, and my students are never bored!

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a NJ elementary school teacher with over 5 years of teaching experience. I possess the following teacher certifications: K-6 Elementary Education, Students with Disabilities, and English as a Second Language.

Elementary Math

As a NJ certified elementary school teacher, I have taught Math for more than 5 years. I have experience teaching to 3rd and 4th grade students using the Everyday Mathematics curriculum. I am also knowledgeable of the Common Core State Standards, and take care to align my lessons to ensure rigorous tutoring sessions.

In addition to using hands-on activities, I also integrate SMART Technologies into my lessons by using a touch-screen laptop.

Social Studies

In addition to possessing NJ teacher certification, I have a Master of Arts degree in Comparative History from Rutgers University.

I have taught Social Studies as an elementary school teacher for over 5 years, and currently teach to 4th and 5th grade students. Topics taught include but are not limited to: Geography Concepts, Map Skills, Native Americans and Tribes, European Explorers, Colonialism, New Jersey State History, American Slavery, and the American Revolution.

My philosophy is that Social Studies should be taught in such a way where it is both content and skills-driven.

Special Needs

I have over 5 years of experience teaching to students with disabilities in an inclusion classroom setting. I have experience with implementing IEPs (individualized education programs) to meet the academic, intellectual, social, and emotional needs of all of my students.

I provide several different modifications for my special needs students, including the use of hands-on activities and the integration of technology (through a touch-screen laptop). I am patient and understanding, but also very encouraging.
