Drew University (Sociology)
Northeastern University (Master's)
I am a 30 year old woman residing in Galloway Township, New Jersey. I attended Drew University as an undergraduate and double majored in Spanish and Sociology and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2008. I then went on to graduate school on a full fellowship for Sociology at Northeastern University in Boston, MA where I earned my Master's degree in 2010 and worked on (but did not complete) my PhD.
I began tutoring in 2005 when my Spanish professor approached me and asked me if I would consider helping my undergraduate peers improve their Spanish skills. Later, during my years in graduate school, I worked as a teaching assistant and then as an instructor, teaching my own classes in Sociology and collaborating with several students one-on-one to design their own directed study courses to pursue their intellectual interests more in-depth. I have also worked for ETS as an English writing and reading scorer, which has built my expertise in evaluating and critiquing student writing at the high school level.
I love working with students and my teaching and tutoring experiences have been immensely rewarding. I enjoy helping students to better understand the material they are learning about and enhancing their reading, writing, and comprehension skills. My tutees and students have appreciated my personable and engaging demeanor and my ability to find simple, understandable ways to explain complex subject matter.
I have both a BA and MA in Sociology and have extensive subject area expertise, including research methods. I won the undergraduate award for Sociology as a graduating senior in 2008 for the highest GPA in the department. I have a graduate certificate in women's and gender studies earned in 2010 in conjunction with my MA. I have taken courses in sociology of gender, race, culture, media, theory, research methods, the justice system, and others, and have taught undergrad courses in the sociology of gender and feminist perspectives.
I have a BA and MA in Sociology and have extensive writing, editing, and research experience. I worked as a research assistant for 2 years in undergrad and 5 years in graduate school, helping professors research and write articles and reports for publication. I have worked for 2 years as an English writing test scorer at the high school level and have expertise in rubric-based writing assignments. As an undergraduate instructor I have extensive experience both constructing and evaluating writing assignments including research papers, reading comprehension assignments, and book reviews. I scored an 800 on SAT verbal section and an 800 on SAT writing, as well as a 680 (96th percentile) on GRE verbal and 5.5 (88th percentile) on GRE analytical writing. I received various writing prizes in both high school and undergrad for research papers.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
