Columbia University (Master's)
I am a physics teacher with 20 years of experience. I have worked in various settings in the past -- as a researcher at Columbia University, as an MCAT course developer at Stanley Kaplan, and as a teacher. I have taught everything from 7th grade general science, to physics, to astronomy, to AP physics. Physics is the kind of subject where you don't know what you really think, until you have heard what you've said. Having a physics buddy to talk over places where you struggle in the curriculum can be the difference between a slog through a frustrating course and a fun, challenging course where you feel good about your accomplishments in the end.
I am also happy to work with lower grades and look forward to working on something different from my usual -- math or elementary, say. I am the mother of three kids (one with special needs) who are working their way through the elementary curriculum and feel I have a good handle on most elementary science, math and reading.
Looking forward to helping students achieve their maximum in a fun and enjoyable way! I am a physics teacher with 20 years of experience. Emily worked with my daughter while she was at sleep away camp. As you can imagine, no kid wants to work on school work during camp but Emily was patient and thoughtful in working with her. I found her last minute as I needed a tutor in Wolfboro, NH (we live in NY). We were lucky to find her.
Thanks so much for your kind words. I hope your daughter does well on her upcoming test.
Ms. J. is terrific! I went to her to learn Excel. This wasn't my first run at it, but this is the first time I was able to follow what we were doing. I'm technophobic and innumerate, and too often people attempting to teach me either move too fast or lose patience. Not so, Ms. J., a professional teacher who showed me why she's been in demand by some of the country's leading secondary schools. I'm a lawyer with degrees from four different universities, including Harvard, and I've encountered no better teaching.
Ms. J. quickly adjusted to my pace, answered my questions without wincing, and we made enough progress in one session to make me eager for more. She's also pleasant company. After I knock off Excel, under her tutelage, I may even ask her to teach me physics, a subject I avoided like a social disease, all through school. Who knows--I may yet get a Nobel.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The MCAT is tough! Getting help is vital!
I am a physics teacher with 20+ years' experience. Physics is the subject that most MCAT students have the most difficulty with. Having taught as long as I have and having a degree in astrophysics, physical science is a strength for me.
In the 1990s I spent a year at Stanley Kaplan rewriting their MCAT course when it changed formats. That year gave me a unique insight into test taking strategies particularly for the MCAT test.
Through my role as science researcher (astrophysics) and high school physics teacher, I have become very adept at Microsoft Office programs. In particular, Excel is an area of particular strength. Whether it is graphing in excel, using formulas, or conditional formatting knowing how to set up effective spreadsheets can be key in so many areas of business and academics.
I have over 20 years of teaching experience behind me and would be happy to make you an Excel "God" or "Goddess."
I came to my love of physics through the back door of astronomy. Astronomy is physics -- the physics of space! I have been doing physics now for about 25 years and I still love it. My college major was a double major in physics and astronomy; I have a masters in astronomy. I have worked at the high school level for 20 years, I have done astronomical research and even wrote a physics text book for Stanley Kaplan's MCAT course.
Physics has frustrated everyone who has had the courage to study it. If you are frustrated you aren't alone. The best way to learn physics is in collaboration and with practice. I would be happy to help anyone through their rough spots!
Standardized testing is always a challenge -- for everyone! Obviously, the more content you are comfortable with the better you will do on the test. I have a lot of experience with math being a high school physics teacher for 20 years now.
What some people don't realize is that understanding yourself as a test taker is also important to doing well on the test. You need to know what types of problems you do well on and which ones you don't. It will help you take the test strategically and maximize your grade. I also have experience with standardize test taking strategy after working for Stanley Kaplan for a year writing the physics part of their MCAT (medical college admission test).
Let me help you prepare for the SATs. We will break the test down and see where you are at. We will work to make you more comfortable with the content you struggle with and more confident with test taking strategies.
