About Steve

Greetings! Thank you for visiting my web profile.
If you are looking for help with any of the language arts, you have come to the right place! I have always had a love of language, so whether it is teaching phonics, sentence diagramming, paragraph structure, essay writing, the elements of style, or research writing, I can help.

Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from Thomas Aquinas College - one of the most academically demanding colleges in the country - and having taught hundreds of students over thirteen years at St Joseph’s Catholic School, a school recognized nationally for academic excellence, I have the subject knowledge, classroom experience, and personal touch needed to help you reach your academic goals.

Communication skills – both oral and written - are in great demand today and the future is bright for anyone who develops these skills. Let me help you do this. I have successfully taught middle school students in grades 6 and 7 as well as freshmen, sophomores and juniors at the high school level. Among the subjects I have taught are English grammar, composition, research writing, Latin, History and Literature (Ancient, Medieval and American). I have also tutored elementary school students in phonics, reading, handwriting, and math.

My personalized tutoring begins with an assessment of current skills; if basic skills are weak or missing, I pull back to put those skills in place. Once the foundation is secure, I give customized, incremental lessons to build advanced skills. Each student receives lessons tailored to his needs and delivered at a pace that allows real learning to take place.

Good writing does not have to be a mystery; contact me today and let’s get started! You’ll be glad you did.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I attended Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, CA, pursuing a double major in Theology and Philosophy with a double minor in mathematics and science. At the heart of the Thomas Aquinas College curriculum are the Great Books of the Western World, a 54 Volume work which contains the greatest and most influential ideas in the Western tradition. These texts retain their central position in the curriculum, even today. In the course of four years of intensive study, I read and studied these great books in both Socratic tutorials and seminars. Beginning with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey and reaching to Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, I and my fellow classmates read, analyzed, and discussed the works of the greatest poets, scientists and philosophers under the supervision of a distinguished faculty. Since my matriculation I have continued to read and study the classics and much of my 15 year teaching career has been dedicated to opening the treasury of the classics to a new generation. In addition, I continue to take courses - 26 to date - related to the classics through the Chantilly, VA based company The Great Courses.

Elementary Math

Having taught and tutored elementary math for over 7 years, I have the skill experience to establish, in young learners, a strong foundation in basic mathematics - both arithmetic and geometry. From simple counting and the four basic operations of arithmetic, to measurement, fractions and decimals, I lead students incrementally through the relationship of the basic operations of arithmetic to simple algebraic thinking. In the realm of geometry, students are guided from basic shape recognition and classification, through the identification and measurement of angles, to the concepts of perimeter, area and volume. I teach both arithmetic and geometry in such a way that even the math-averse child will have the delight of saying "I get it!"

English

As a graduate of Thomas Aquinas College, and an experienced classroom teacher at a private Catholic school, I have taught a broad array of subjects to students at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have not only the expertise but the patience necessary to work with young people and help them overcome their difficulties. If you would like me to help your daughter, please contact me.

Reading

I have taught children in elementary school through middle school - including four of my own children - how to read through the phonics method. Mastering the phonograms allows the child to sound out any word he encounters, and build the vocabulary power he will need in both his reading and his writing. Young children delight in learning the sounds the phongrams make and gain skills which greatly improve their capacity to learn. You will be pleased to see how effective this method can be. Let me show you how!

Study Skills

During my thirteen years as a full time teacher I have taught study skills as an integrated component of the English curriculum. Topics covered included: getting and staying organized, how to use a student planner, time management, how to take notes using a variety of notetaking systems, including the Cornell Notetaking System. Other topics included systems and techniques to improve reading comprehension and retention - using the SQ3R technique, marginal notes and diagramming, for example, to help students read more effectively. Also covered were listening skills and memory techniques to aid notetaking and comprehension.

In addition, at the request of my school's administration, I taught an expanded version of this study skills module as a summer course for students entering St. Joseph's, as well as the general public. I conducted this summer study skills program for seven years. Consequently, I regard myself as qualified to teach in this subject area.

Writing

As a graduate of Thomas Aquinas College holding a BA in Liberal Arts, and as a teacher with thirteen years experience at a private Catholic school recognized nationally for academic excellence, I have the subject knowledge, teaching expertise and classroom experience to help students learn and enjoy academic success. I have successfully taught students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. In addition, I have privately tutored students at these grade levels as well as college students and professionals. I am a kind and patient tutor who sets challenging goals based on the ability of each student.I keep my expectations high and help the student raise his own expectations. I coach the student through difficulties and help him to cross learning plateaus, which helps him build confidence in himself. In the hands of a skillful tutor, every child is capable of overcoming his academic difficulties and experiencing the joy of "I get it!"
