About Dawn

Bio

My love of teaching comes from a life-long career of daily learning, while in the health care profession. While in RN school, I became a L.P.N./L.V.N, and when I passed my NCLEX-RN Exam the first time in 1993, a colleague asked me to take classes together that summer towards our B.S.N.s. I suffered from test anxiety, often entering a final exam with a A or B, only to "blank out" despite the fact that I knew the material well, but I agreed. Well, not only did I complete my B.S.N. while working...

Well, not only did I complete my B.S.N. while working full-time, but I also became a Certified Gerontological Nurse before I achieved my B.S.N. I consider that an achievement, because the following year RNs were required to have their Bachelor's degrees prior to taking any certification exams.

I specialize in Nursing Exam test taking, NCLEX-RN and English as a Second Language. I also specialize in English and Reading Comprehension. I will help you to improve your grades and understanding. I will give students work for home, as well as provide feedback. I expect honest feedback from students, as I will provide the same.

I hold myself to a high standard, and will do the same of my students. While I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, I will attempt to offer makeup classes. I try to be flexible with time. I feel a quiet environment is so important to tutoring, and learning that I am a fan of local libraries and quiet coffee shops. I am also open to tutoring in your home if your child is young.

I look forward to meeting you, and assisting you in succeeding in your academic endeavors!

Grammar,

Throughout high school, and college my writing skills were a strength. I had to write nursing care plans throughout college, which had to be grammatically correct, as well as concise. One of my pet-peeves is when someone uses the incorrect word in a sentence. For example...Their is a difference between they're and there. I can help make these more understandable to you or your child (ren).
NCLEX

NCLEX

I was fortunate to have passed the NCLEX-RN exam the FIRST time in 1993, although I do suffer from test anxiety. I did study for my NCLEX-RN exam, with a review manual, which I do recommend. The colleges I attended prepared me for the exam in that, the questions were written in the same format.

Reading,

Reading

I was an avid reader as a child and teen. Then I went to Nursing School, and my leisurely joy of reading needed to be replaced by a great deal of reading and studying. As an adult, I still enjoy where reading can transport me. You can travel anywhere you choose if you are enthralled with a great book!
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I achieved my RN (Associate Degree) by learning to study in several ways, with different methods. I pre read before a lecture, wrote questions in the borders of the many large books and highlighted the point of each paragraph. Or new words with definitions. I taped my lectures and listened to them in my car, when I commuted to class, and returning home. A year after I became a R.N., a former classmate asked me if I wanted to return for my B.S.N (Bachelor's Degree), with her, which we did. We car pooled, and studied together, it was great! In 1998, I completed my B.S.N at Riviera College, now called Riviera University. I would have to say the most important thing about developing study Skills is organization. Calendars that you can punch with a hole punch and insert into a 3-ring binder is so helpful with this. Reading assignments in subjects can be broken down so they are completed by the due date or exam.
Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

Vocabulary has always been a strength of mine. I imagine being an avid reader as a child, then having to read a great deal in nursing school, exposed me to even more new vocabulary. Words have origins, Latin is largely one of medicine and nursing terminology. Learning the meaning of suffixes and roots, makes vocabulary easier to learn and use correctly. I can work with you or your child (ren) to improve your understanding of vocabulary.
Spelling

English

English,

English

English as a second language can be overwhelming for anyone, let alone a student whose parents do not speak English. I have studied foreign languages and have empathy for those studying English. Reading is a favorite pastime, which also helps with the study of English, or learning the language. Whether it is vocabulary , grammar, or spelling I can help you improve your grades or understanding of English.

I was fortunate enough to have passed my NCLEX-RN exam the FIRST time in 1993. I was the last group of graduate nurses that took the paper and pencil exam over two days. I must give credit to the schools I attended for the way the questions were worded on their exams, for my success on my boards. They were written exactly in the same format.

I achieved my RN in 1993, and have many study aids for the exam. I have also downloaded test questions for potential students needing tutoring. I have re-ordered another 6 page laminated study guide from Amazon for student's use as well.

Knowledgeable, patient and pleasant tutor.

Dawn has helped me study for my upcoming NCLEX-RN exam. She has quizzed me with flashcards and used my NCLEX style question books as well as her own studying material. Dawn has RN experience which was evident in her teaching strategies and useful in coming up with real-life examples of questions that I had. Dawn was able to answer all my questions and has helped build my confidence. She is very supportive and always came to a lesion with a positive attitude. Dawn was easy to get a hold of and stated she would always be available for questions at any time, as well as having a flexible schedule. I would definitely recommend her to others in need of tutoring.
