UMass Boston (History and French)
I started teaching piano when I was 19 years old and realized how much I enjoy teaching, particularly one-on-one with students of all ages. Since then, I homeschooled all three of my children, K-12. My two oldest have graduated with honors from the University of Tampa and Merrimack College. My third is now a driver tech for a Medical Supply company. While homeschooling, I continued to teach piano, as well as provide classroom programs and private tutoring in the areas of History, Spanish, Geography, French, Literature, Science, and Writing. I continue to teach piano, and also am currently employed by a local educational group as a private tutor for the SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, SAT Subject Tests in Spanish, French, and Literature, and Study Skills. I also am a certified tutor with the Amesbury, Massachusetts Public Schools, and offer private in-home tutoring in most subjects, K-12, except for 11th and 12th grade Math and Science. While I am unable to provide test prep tutoring privately, I am available for in-home private tutoring in the subject matters listed on my profile. I also am an approved substitute teacher for the Colchester Public Schools.
I am moving to Sandown, NH in June 2017 and offer both tutoring and piano lessons in my home, in addition to traveling within 15 miles. I look forward to meeting new students and enjoy helping them flourish and succeed in academic areas that they find to be a struggle. My homeschooling experience with three different children with very different learning styles and academic passions has helped me to tailor each tutoring session to the needs of the individual student. I believe in encouraging, nurturing, and building confidence in addition to academics.
I look forward to working with your learner! I started teaching piano when I was 19 years old and realized how much I enjoy teaching, particularly one-on-one with students of all ages. Bethany immediately exceeded my expectations! She's bright, kind and energetic!!! Anyone who chooses to use her will be so impressed!
Very appreciative of Bethany and the work she has done preparing our daughter for her Spanish final. She is prepared, detailed and very pleasant to work with. Excellent tutor!
Thanks so much, Allyson. I enjoyed working with your daughter!
Bethany makes you instantly feel comfortable. She is so patient and thorough in her teaching style. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone.
Loved that she was able to do a quick assessment of needs and provide homework to keep the kids busy between visits!
In my homeschooling program I taught Algebra I to all three of my children. I also tutor Algebra I principles in the math portion of the SAT.
While my college degree is in French and History, I spent the last 20 years homeschooling all three of my children, from K-12. Two have graduated with honors from college and the third is completing an intensive apprenticeship in Building Construction. I believe that the years spent covering all aspects of Elementary Education provided the solid foundation for all of their future learning. Those first years were vital in not only providing the tools to learn but also in instilling a life-long love for learning. I used different methods based on the learning styles of each child, in the areas of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Humanities, and the Arts. I custom-designed their Elementary Education programs and believe this is the key to tutoring Elementary students.
I successfully home schooled all three of my children, K-12. Elementary math was a key building block towards their success during middle school and high school.
I successfully home schooled my three children, K-12, with in-depth science lessons, labs, field trips, and independent explorations.
In addition to being a tutor for the SAT and ACT, I have taught literature and writing to homeschool students both individually and in group settings. I am also a published writer of Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre scripts with Wesleyan Thespians.
I completed four years of Honors French in high school, lived with a French family in an exchange program during high school, and majored in French in college. I have traveled to France and Quebec a number of times and taught French I at UMass Amherst's Upward Bound program. I also taught French I for a homeschool high school group.
I love grammar (yes, it's true). Grammar was a key component of my children's home schooling program. In addition, I tutor for the writing/grammar sections of both the SAT and ACT.
Although I did not formally major in literature, I have had a lifelong passion for the classics. I have also tutored for the AP literature exam and am certified for the SAT subject exam in literature. I developed a literature curriculum for high school that blended literature, history, art, and music.
I used a phonics-based approach to homeschool all 3 of my children. I found that the use of phonics, combined with a whole-language approach, enabled all 3 of them to succeed in reading, not only for understanding but also for the joy of reading in and of itself. I prefer to use the Modern Curriculum Press phonics materials, but can work with other materials as needed.
I was raised by a mom who was a piano teacher, and started substitute teaching for her when I was 19. Over the years I started my own in-home piano lesson business, at times having up to 27 students a week. My goal is for each student to learn to read music, to be proficient in the instrument, and ultimately to have joy in playing. I have taught students from age 8, through high school and college, and even had some adult students along the way.
During my years of schooling my three children, I believe Pre-Algebra was one of the most important subjects. It lays the foundation for high school math as well as covers key material necessary for most College Board exams. In addition to using contemporary methods of teaching Pre-Algebra I introduce, as needed, some more old-fashioned strategies that I myself learned in 8th grade and which continue to help students with various math abilities.
As a big fan of grammar and spelling, I enjoy proofreading. I have an eye for detail as well as a love for good writing.
I started reading at age four and have loved books as long as I can remember. I taught all three of my children to read in our home schooling program. Each had different strengths and weaknesses in learning to read. I enjoyed finding unique ways to use their strengths to develop strong reading skills in their early years.
I took Spanish in both high school and college. I have tutored for the AP Spanish exam and the SAT Subject exam in Spanish. I also have spent the last five years traveling for a non-profit organization to Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, using my Spanish to speak at women's conferences. I taught my oldest son Spanish. He is now fluent, and has taught in the Dominican Republic himself.
I believe that spelling is a key component of good writing. I included a spelling program in my children's homeschooling program through 6th grade. I also love words and find that spelling them correctly is not only important but is also fun!
I have taught Study Skills to all three of my children, homeschooling them K-12. I also co-wrote a Study Skills Curriculum for Summit Educational Group for both individuals and classroom programs. I was recently asked to revise this program for the Middle School level as well, which has been used in private schools in Connecticut.
As a life-long reader, my vocabulary developed naturally, rather than through word lists at school. I also am able to use Latin and Greek roots when "decoding" words I haven't seen before. I also tutor vocabulary for both the SAT and SSAT.
I am a published writer of Murder Mystery Dinner Theater scripts with Wesleyan Thespians. I have also taught writing Workshops and provided one-on-one tutoring in writing for homeschool students.
