About Dan

Prospective students,

Salinger, Fitzgerald, Miller, Hughes, Frost, Hurston, Steinbeck, Hansberry, Hinton, Krakauer, Dickinson, Thoreau and Harper Lee. These are the authors, playwrights and poets who have most shaped my teaching and tutoring philosophies. Some of them have also shaped my life philosophies. In class, whether we're at the time reading their words or not, I constantly look to the morals of Atticus Finch, the struggles and confusion of Holden Caulfield, the determination of Beneatha Younger, the dreams of Lennie and George and Ponyboy's ability to "stay gold".

I've been working with teenagers for over 20 years, and have been teaching since 2001. I am certified to teach English for grades 5 - 8 and 9 - 12. From the first moment I walked into a classroom I knew I was meant to be a teacher. A good teacher can make a difference in a kid's life on so many levels. I especially love teaching American Literature. It is so rewarding to see when a student understands and relates to a time proven story, and who can then philosophize on their comprehension through class discussion.

Tutoring is an extension of teaching. Some of my best work has been done when a student pulls me aside and asks for extra help. During my career I have been repeatedly thanked by parents for my caring nature and dedication to the overall education of each of my students. Tutoring allows me to see an individual student's progress, and also what that student might need for specific help. I have been tutoring even longer than I've been teaching since my previous career involved managing a high school student internship program. Those kids constantly came to my office looking for tutoring with their English classes and thus inspired my move to becoming a teacher. I look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,
Dan B.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
