About Shelley

About Me:
I'm a New Hampshire certified English teacher who has been employed by the same award-winning school district for the past ten years. On top of that, I've been a major contributor - authoring a couple hundred lessons - for a large educational website.

Currently, I'm on a two-year extended maternity leave, but that doesn't mean I've put my teacher's tote away while I'm taking on the main responsibility of child-rearing. Professional development is incredibly important to me (and critical to my certified status with the state), and I'm always seeking out new methods, new books, and new lessons.

How I'm Different:

While my reach is far and wide when it comes to what I'm most comfortable tutoring, please know that you do not want me tackling calculus! Do yourself a favor and find a math expert for that!

What I am is a dedicated, knowledgeable ELA educator who applies research-validated approaches to the way I teach. Having that said, how I'm different than a large majority of tutors is that I create an entirely new curriculum for students to target their areas of interest and opportunity. No canned lessons here!

A fair amount of my students use my services for enrichment, yet I'm skilled in bringing students up closer to grade-level through rigorous and approachable curriculum. I am also comfortable helping students with their current school work or blending a mix of both.

Additionally, once becoming my regular student (on average a lesson per week or more), I will become available to you via text, Google Docs, and email throughout the week. I check my account several times a day, and you are welcome to email me with questions, quick revisions, book recommendations (I have read hundreds of YA Lit titles), and anything else. Think of me as your partner in education, and no matter the task - except calculus, of course - I'm happy to help! ;)

How and When We Meet:

I'm based on the NH Seacoast, so for nearly all of my students, I'm offering tutoring online. Through Skype and Google Docs, I'm able to accomplish nearly everything - and sometimes even more - of what I do in the traditional classroom. Plus, your students get to practice the essential tech skills that will make them even more college and career ready.

I'm available weekday evenings and weekends for scheduled lessons. All other communication can come at any point, and I will respond as soon as my son's next nap or Daniel Tiger episode. :)

How to Get Started:

I'm more than happy to set up FREE consultations/lessons with prospective students, and we can come up with a game plan for our sessions. Please reach out regarding any questions or concerns you might have!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

The Best Tutor

We have had 3 other writing tutors for my two girls locally and found Shelley online recently. Shelley is by far the best. My girls look forward to the lessons weekly. Shelley's experience shows that she is very detailed and well prepared. She follows up with homework assignment and informs us what they did and provides progress after each lesson. We feel so lucky to have found her. In fact, we w
