About Elizabeth

I have been writing poetry, prose and nonfiction for thirty-five years, during which I have published five books, have had work appear in many literary journals and have garnered awards, grants and fellowships. Most notably, I was nominated for the Lenore Marshall Prize from the Academy of American Poets and was named as the Literary Arts Fellow in the state of Maine not long ago.

As part of the New Hampshire Art-in Education Program I once taught every level of students, K-12. I also taught children and adults with disabilities with the Very Special Arts Program in the same state. I then went on to teach all forms of writing at the undergraduate level at Boston College (1990-2007), after which I was faculty in Fairfield University's Low-residency MFA Program In Creative Writing (2010-2012).

My passion for writing fuels my passion for teaching. I have an extremely trained eye, deft and deep editorial skills and consistently enable students such that they can get their writing to the highest possible level. I work with students wherever they are at, always with an aim to enliven, elevate and refine their writing. I infuse those I teach with a love of writing which is the most ideal motivation because it springs from inspiration. As I am in possession of a large number of prompts and resources gathered from my many years of teaching, I am skilled at providing the right materials to develop particular skills. Because I thoroughly understand the intricacies of the writing process, I can impart this meaningful knowledge in a manner that has lasting impact. As the true teaching of writing requires much individual attention, tutoring provides an ideal, rich situation to do just that.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
