About Al

I've had a 25yr+ career in technology. Educated as an Electrical Engineer with an MSEE, and employed as a Software Engineer all of my career, always in the niche area of "firmware" (software that lives very close to the hardware, and requires an extensive knowledge of hardware to write).

As life long learner in the Sciences and Mathematics, I enjoy keeping my Science and Math skills up to date, and will watch Science and Math courses (including refreshers on the basics) while riding my exercise bike or when otherwise trapped in the house due to weather.

I think I can really help any student who is struggling with Math or Science, so long as the student is motivated to learn. I tend to be a person who works with students in a two-way dialog rather than a "teacher" who just lectures. I might ask the student to explain to me their thought process to see where they are having trouble. Once a student can explain the concept to me, then I know they are on their way to mastery.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have mastery of Algebra was needed to obtain degree in Electrical Engineering. I have a strong interest in helping motivated students understand Algebra. Algebra is almost always a prerequisite for higher level mathematics.

Although my tutoring experience goes back to my college days in the early to mid 1980's, I think I can really help any student who is struggling with Math or Science, so long as the student is motivated to learn.

Algebra 2

I have a mastery of Algebra was needed to obtain degree in Electrical Engineering. I have a strong interest in helping motivated students understand Algebra. Algebra is almost always a prerequisite for higher level mathematics.

Calculus

The mastery of Calculus was needed to obtain degree in Electrical Engineering. I have a strong interest in helping others understand Calculus. It is one of the most powerful mathematical tools a person can know.

Geometry

Geometry has always been a favorite of mine. I enjoy tutoring this subject because it helps build a strong foundation for more advanced Mathematics. For me, Geometry came very naturally, and kick-started my interest in Mathematics overall. (I was very weak in Algebra while taking Geometry, and only the year after did I realize I also needed to master Algebra if I wanted to pursue a technical field.)
