In 1986, having taught at private schools for eight years, I completed my masters in education, with a concentration in secondary mathematics, at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While trained to teach math up to the level of calculus, I worked for more than twenty years as a middle-school level math teacher in both private and public schools. During that time I have worked with numerous special needs students, including those with ADD/ADHD. Patience, consistency, clear expectations, and what I like to call flexible structure are key in working with these students. The label ADD/ADHD in no way implies a lack of academic ability.
I taught ESL for two years while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Iran from 1969-1971. In preparation, I was given extensive training in TEFL, Teaching English as a Foreign language.
After my Peace Corps years I applied my TEFL knowledge and skills at several educational venues in the Boston area. Because I speak Farsi, I especially enjoy working with Iranian students.
